About the Role

Description

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is responsible for the safety of all members and guests using the beaches. 


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintains the beach area according to both State and Silver Bay standards. 
  2. Maintains cleanliness of all beaches; rakes sand and lawn, removes trash, cleans rafts, etc. 
  3. Maintains control of the beach area; commands respect of swimmers; willing to discipline individuals not obeying beach rules.
  4. Uses good judgment to determine when beach is unsafe for swimmers, i.e., electrical storm, extremely high winds, etc.
  5. Keeps accurate attendance records of members/guests using the beach
  6. Checks equipment weekly, including rafts, stands, rescue tubes, and first aid supplies.
  7. Participates in a training program designed by the Waterfront Team Leader, including  daily conditioning, and review of lifeguard skills, including rescue tube, backboard, rescue board, escapes, and emergency drills.
  8. Demonstrates skill in use of fins, masks, and snorkel used for a deep water search and rescue.
  9. Develops skills in using row boats in rescue situations. 
  10. Exercises appropriate judgment when providing swimming instruction. 
  11. Develops skills in recognizing potential accidents, use of SCUBA diver flags, and executing rescues.
  12. Performs other duties, as requested.
  13. As a 24-hour operation,      all staff may be asked to work weekends, evenings, night shifts and/or      holidays in order to serve our members, guests, and program participants.

Requirements

  • Must hold a current YMCA or equivalent Red Cross Lifeguard certification or be willing to attain one.
  • Must hold a professional's First Aid and CPR certification or be willing to attain one.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to enforce rules in a professional and positive manner are required.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups of people representing all social and economic segments of the community.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires the ability to swim, walk, pull, push, sit, bend, or stand for prolonged periods of time working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Other physical requirements include the ability to pull weight through the water and to rescue someone drowning or injured in the water.
