Job Title: Female PE Teacher
Reports to: Department Chair
Position Summary:
The Physical Education Teacher at Boylan Catholic High School plays a pivotal role in fostering a comprehensive and engaging learning environment within the framework of Catholic values. Responsible for instructing students in various disciplines, the teacher is expected to impart a strong foundation while integrating moral and ethical considerations in the teaching approach. The Physical Education Teacher will develop students' physical skills and abilities, strength, agility, poise, coordination, and teamwork; to develop students' understanding of the importance of exercise to physical and mental well-being; and to motivate students to work towards, physical fitness, hygiene, and good health.
This gender-specific requirement is a Bona Fide Occupational Qualification (BFOQ) necessitated by our commitment to student privacy and the specific pastoral care duties associated with this role.
Areas of Responsibility:
- The essential role of the Catholic school teacher is to witness the Gospel message and to lead students to reflect on a Christian approach to life while building the faith community.
- The PE teacher should provide students the opportunities to develop their gifts as peacemakers and stewards for the service of the world community.
- Design, develop, and deliver quality lesson plans and curricula that adhere to national and school guidelines.
- Deliver high-quality, engaging instruction in the form of discussion, direct teaching, demonstrations and independent practice using a variety of proven methods.
- Differentiate lessons when needed to give all students access to the curriculum regardless of disability, instructional level, English proficiency or level of interest in the subject.
- Teach knowledge of, and develop skills and abilities in, physical fitness, rhythm and dance, coordination and agility, exercise, and sports,
- Develop students' concepts in leadership, teamwork, responsibility and social skills; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and appropriate feedback regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in physical educational activities, and modify instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.
- Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required.
- Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensure that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school policies, and establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Inspect equipment and field areas used to ensure they are in good and safe working order.
- Grade papers, update records, and handle various administrative tasks.
- Create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and voicing concerns.
- Maintain a safe, orderly and supportive classroom by modeling expected behavior and standards, promoting positive interactions and quickly addressing behaviors that are not in line with the school discipline plan.
- Improve skills and knowledge in teaching by regularly taking classes, attending workshops and discovering new methods of delivering exciting content to students.
- Work with school administration to develop curriculum, revise school policies, and implement new technology.
- Assist with initiatives and activities within the school such as standardized testing, class level presentations and course forecasting.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of current physical education instructional methods, as well as differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation about performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to work with colleagues to design and teach multi-disciplinary courses
- The ability to answer sensitive questions and create an environment where everyone’s opinions are respected.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
- Illinois Professional Educator Licensure
- Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level is preferred.
- Understand, embrace, and be able to articulate the mission and vision of Boylan Catholic High School.
