The affiliated Aga Khan University Hospital provides state-of-the-art clinical facilities and well-equipped diagnostic services. The University currently has teaching sites in Pakistan, East Africa, the United Kingdom, and Afghanistan, and is a major component of Aga Khan Development Network.
The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Aga Khan University, Karachi, is the regional leader in establishing high quality clinical service and academic programs. The current clinical facility consists of 60 beds including fast track, separate adult and paediatric emergency units, cardiac emergency, a clinical decision unit, resuscitation rooms, isolation rooms and triage. The main Emergency Department (ED) provides care to over 75,000 patients a year. Most patients require complex medical and surgical/trauma care. In addition, the department supervises a satellite free standing emergency department.
The Department of Emergency Services at the Aga Khan University Hospital offers multiple specialties under one roof, enabling doctors from different services to work seamlessly together, offering a multidisciplinary health approach resulting in an effective continuum of care. The patients who require additional consultation are catered to, by visits of relevant specialty doctors from other departments, making complete, holistic care possible under one roof.

This is a grant-funded contractual position.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible to:
- lead and manage the department’s complete research and grant portfolio, including nationally and internationally funded projects
- support departmental leadership in strategic planning, forecasting future research needs, and ensuring availability of required resources
- manage end-to-end grant administration, including identification of funding opportunities, proposal and supplement submissions, and post-award management
- develop and standardise research-related proposals, policies, procedures, pathways, documentation tools, and educational materials
- serve as the primary focal person for sponsor portals and electronic systems such as eRA Commons, ASSIST, and related platforms
- demonstrate strong proficiency in the PURE award management system for end-to-end research and grant management
- coordinate with principal investigators and research teams on protocol implementation, timelines, deliverables, and reporting obligations
- plan, coordinate, and execute national and international workshops, training sessions, meetings, and capacity-building activities
- develop, monitor, and control research grant budgets, analyse budget variances, and coordinate accurate financial reporting
- manage sub-awards, including set-up, monitoring, reporting, and close-out in accordance with sponsor and institutional policies
- oversee and ensure compliant disbursement of grant funds to sub-awardees, including financial tracking, documentation, and reconciliation
- ensure full compliance with granting agency, institutional, and regulatory requirements, including international funders
- independently draft, coordinate, and submit research performance progress reports and all donor-mandated technical and financial reports
- oversee contractual processes, including vendor management, sub-award agreements, service agreements, memoranda of understanding, and policy-compliant negotiations
- independently lead and manage internal and external grant audits, management reviews, and sponsor queries, ensuring timely responses and compliance
- maintain and strengthen quality assurance mechanisms across all research and grant management activities
- manage operational risks, resolve conflicts, and address performance or conduct issues within research and administrative teams
- build, maintain, and strengthen partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to support research objectives
- ensure continuity of research operations and timely delivery of outputs in high-pressure environments.
Requirements
You should have:
- a master’s degree from a reputable university
- at least eight years of experience in healthcare administration and management, including a minimum of three years in a management cadre, of which at least two years must be at the manager level
- demonstrated expertise in research operations, grant management, sub-award administration, and donor compliance
- strong analytical skills, including experience in budget management, variance analysis, and interpretation of statistical data
- ability to develop and maintain data dashboards and sound knowledge of resource and financial management
- excellent negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- proven ability in conflict management and operational risk management
- strong interpersonal skills with an entrepreneurial mindset
- ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and meet stringent deadlines
- willingness to travel nationally and internationally, as required
- credentials or formal training in risk management, quality management, and/or project management will be considered an added advantage.
