About the Role

Description


Position Scope:

The ThinkBIG Technician Trainee participates in a two-year Caterpillar ThinkBIG program combining classroom instruction with hands-on training to develop expertise in servicing and repairing Cat machines and engines. This role builds foundational skills in advanced diagnostics, hydraulics, powertrains, electronics, and other technologies, preparing graduates for careers as specialized technicians in industries such as construction, agriculture, mining, and power generation.


This program requires a rotation of living in Americus, GA and your Stowers location for 8 weeks at a time until graduation which is usually about 18-24 months.


Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • General knowledge of engines, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, mechanical, and pneumatic systems.
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools, air tools, precision measuring instruments, laptops, diagnostic software, and rigging equipment.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and contamination control standards.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to complete accurate documentation.
  • Flexibility to work various schedules, including overtime and on-call assignments.

Preferred Qualification(s):

  • Prior exposure to mechanical or technical work environments.
  • Interest in heavy equipment technology and diagnostics.

Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of ThinkBIG program coursework leading to an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science in South Georgia.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Complete assigned jobs and tasks to meet flat rate times and re-work metrics.
  • Work safely and follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Complete related paperwork and access required databases (work orders, parts orders, DBS, SIS Web).
  • Remove and install parts, disassemble and assemble components, and test and adjust assemblies with minimal supervision.
  • Follow contamination control and HAZMAT regulations.
  • Complete all assigned training in a timely and proficient manner.
  • Participate in internships and on-the-job training at the dealership.

Leadership Responsibilities:

This position does not include supervisory responsibilities but requires accountability for quality work and adherence to safety and training standards.


Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • One to three years of related experience or training in mechanical or technical fields.
  • Ability to provide accurate information for quoting and job documentation.
  • Clean driving record and ability to obtain CDL within 90 days for field assignments.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull heavy components.
  • Manual dexterity for handling tools and equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, stoop, and kneel for extended periods.
  • Must pass DOT physical and Work Steps assessment.
  • Ability to wear PPE and meet MSHA certification requirements if applicable.

Work Environment:

  • Combination of classroom, shop, and field environments.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, chemicals, and outdoor conditions.
  • Noise levels may vary from moderate to loud.
  • Requires travel for field assignments and training.

This position is in a classroom, office and shop environment. Personal protective equipment must be worn in areas as required. Although the work usually is not considered inherently dangerous, employees must be careful while performing onsite services.
