SUMMARY

The Consumer & Home Equity Loan Underwriter is responsible for originating, processing, underwriting and closing consumer loans and home equity products (Home Equity Loans & HELOCs). This role ensures loan decisions are made within Credit Union lending policies, regulatory requirements and sound credit and collateral underwriting standards while delivering exceptional member service and promoting Credit Union products. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Based on business needs splits time between loan processing and underwriting.
  • Meet with members and potential members to identify opportunities to cross sell ancillary products, such as debt protection, by engaging members in needs-based conversations and providing clear, compliant product education. 
  • Conduct outbound follow up calls and respond to member inquiries in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Interview loan applicants, obtain documentation, analyze creditworthiness, and decision loan applications in accordance with Credit Union policies and procedures while always looking for ways to “yes”.  
  • Originate, process and underwrite consumer lending products including secured and unsecured loans, ensuring completeness and accuracy of documentation and adherence to pricing and loan program guidelines. 
  • Originate and underwrite home equity products including Home Equity Loans and HELOCs. Evaluate member credit, debt to income ratios income stability collateral value and overall loan structure to support safe and sound lending decisions. 
  • Communicate loan decisions to members and explain terms, conditions, payments, and available products to support the members financial goals. 
  • Prepare loan documents and coordinates consumer and home equity loan closings. Close and fund loans, disburse checks, and process related products as applicable (GAP, payment protections, etc.)
  • Ensure all home equity lending requirements are met including appraisal/valuation ordering and review, fold certification, hazard insurance, verification, title work review, lien positions verification and resolution of any title exceptions.
  • Coordinate with third party vendors (title companies, appraisers, attorneys/settlement agents) to ensure timely and compliant processing and closing of home equity loans and HELOCs.
  • Perform quality control on all loan files to ensure loan and collateral information is correct, required documents and disclosures are provided, and all loan documents are accurately prepared and properly executed.  
  • Maintain accurate loan records and ensure documents are uploaded to the core imaging system timely with verification of accuracy and completeness. 
  • Perform account maintenance including payoffs, lien releases, subordination requests and other collateral related requests (as applicable).
  • Participate in quality control audits, ongoing training, and compliance initiatives in collaboration with the Lending Department. 
  • Proactively seek to increase product, credit risk, and subject matter knowledge to better serve members.  
  • Other duties as assigned. 


Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Associates degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3+ years of consumer and or real estate underwriting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of lending fundamentals, credit analysis, and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and loan origination software.
  • Ability to obtain NMLS certification (if required for mortgage-related HELOCs). 
  • Able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions. 
  • Able to manage multiple priorities at once.
