About the Role

Description

Mary’s Place provides safe and inclusive shelter and services for women, children and families on their journey out of homelessness. We operate several 24x7 family centers/shelters in King County. We serve hundreds of families – moms, dads, and children – providing a safe place for them to be inside and together at night, along with food, showers, clothing, and access to housing and employment resources. We believe that no one’s child should sleep outside.

The Dish/Prep Cook reports to the Food Services Chef/Manager and is a passionate individual with dish washing and basic food preparation experience. The Dish/Prep Cook works in collaboration with the Food Services Production Team to assist women and families experiencing homelessness by providing delicious and nutritious meals, as well as assisting with sorting and organizing food donations.


This full-time, non-exempt position is located at our downtown Seattle site.


The schedule available for this position is:

Tuesday-Saturday 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The hourly wage is $25.00/hour DOE.


Key Responsibilities

  • Wash dishes, mop floors, take out trash and recycling, and maintain an organized dish room
  • Assist central kitchen with food preparation. This includes chopping, slicing, dicing, and portioning of meals for the day.
  • Assist daily clean-up, sanitation and cleaning schedules in kitchen including associated paperwork, logs and entries
  • Provide support to the operations staff as directed
  • Ensure that the Mary's Place kitchen is compliant with and exceeds standard health and safety regulations
  • Support, promote, and adhere to vision, mission, and values of Mary’s Place
  • Maintain a calm demeanor and model positive behavior.
  • Participate effectively as a team member through communication, cooperation, information sharing, and problem solving
  • Participate in staff trainings and programs as required
  • Other tasks or duties as assigned.

Requirements

Skills/Qualifications Required

  • 1-2 years institutional and restaurant experience including operating dish room equipment and washing pots, pans, utensils
  • Working knowledge of all food preparation and production standards including sanitation safety standards
  • Experience in a fast-paced kitchen and volume, batch cooking
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills, flexibility and willingness to shift priorities as needed
  • Ability to interact effectively as a team member
  • Ability to follow all sanitation procedures
  • Reliable and consistent attendance is required
  • Food Handler permit required; serve safe training preferred (must acquire within 30 days of hire)
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred
  • Sensitivity to the needs of guests who are homeless, low-income, limited English speaking, or impacted by domestic violence, substance abuse or other barriers to employment
  • Commitment to diversity and an ability to work well with diverse family styles and multiethnic populations
  • Complete and submit a TB test within 30 days of employment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand for full shift periods, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, type, and reach with hands and arms; and requires the ability to occasionally push, pull, lift and/or carry supplies up to 50 pounds.
  • The employee is required to perform physical and repetitive motions.
  • Work takes place in a social services environment where long periods of sitting, working on a computer, walking to various work areas, going up and down stairs, and standing are required.
  • Travel to program sites and meetings outside the office and around the county are necessary.
  • Efforts like attention to detail, interacting with others in-person and through email, using critical thinking skills to strategize, develop and implement business plans, create and edit documents, listen and participate verbally at meetings.
  • Ability to work in an environment where there may be animals present, including dogs

  • Medical and dental insurance with the cost for core employee coverage paid at 100% by the company and competitive family rates
  • Basic Life Insurance of $50,000 at no cost to employee; option to buy up for additional coverage
  • 403(b) plan with a 50% employer match on the first 6% employee contribution. Eligible to participate upon hire; eligible for the match after first year of employment.
  • Unlimited use ORCA pass for a small deduction per pay period
  • 10 days paid time off (PTO) each calendar year (accrued by pay period)
  • 10 days of sick time each calendar year (accrued by pay period)
