About the Role

Description

The Heavy Construction Equipment Shop Technician for Newman Tractor diagnoses, maintains, and repairs a wide range of heavy construction equipment in a shop environment. You will work on dozers, articulated dump trucks, excavators, skid steers, rollers, loaders, tractors, and more across brands such as Sany, CAT, Volvo, Bell, and Kubota. This role requires strong technical expertise, sound troubleshooting skills, and a disciplined pre-work inspection process to ensure repairs are completed efficiently, equipment operates at peak performance, and safety standards are maintained. Electrical, hydraulic, and diagnostic skills are required, along with ownership of a complete set of diesel mechanic tools. Requirements

  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues on heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, loaders, dozers, and motor graders)
  • Perform repairs, adjustments, and component replacements to restore equipment to safe operating condition
  • Use diagnostic tools, telematics data, and machine history to identify root cause and resolve issues efficiently
  • Complete scheduled maintenance (e.g., fluid checks, oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and adjustments)
  • Inspect equipment for wear, damage, and potential failure points; recommend corrective actions as needed
  • Verify safety systems and components are operational and meet required standards
  • Review the ERP system for service history, including prior repairs and recurring issues
  • Review telematics reports for fault codes, performance data, and indicators of abnormal operation
  • Use historical and real-time data to determine the most likely cause of failure and define the diagnostic plan
  • Coordinate with service advisors and team members to confirm symptoms, clarify concerns, and set repair expectations
  • Identify and gather required parts, tools, and equipment before beginning work, including items commonly needed based on known failure patterns
  • Confirm the work area, tooling, and equipment are safe and ready prior to starting the repair
  • Document diagnostics, repairs, parts usage, and labor time accurately in the ERP system
  • Maintain clear maintenance records, including findings, corrective actions, and recommendations
  • Ensure documentation meets the Four C’s standard (Concern, Cause, Correction, and Confirmation)
  • Provide updates and reports on equipment condition, completed repairs, and recommended future service
  • Follow all company and industry safety standards during maintenance and repair activities
  • Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow environmental and spill-prevention procedures
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area to support safety and efficiency
  • Collaborate with shop technicians and service leadership to coordinate repairs and maintain a smooth workflow
  • Share knowledge and provide technical support to team members as needed

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of heavy equipment systems, including diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and transmissions
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools, telematics platforms, and other technical resources
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance and repair
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to lift and carry parts and tools weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for detailed diagnostic and repair work
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical school or OEM training preferred
  • Must provide own tools required for heavy equipment repairs
  • Ability to work in a shop environment with exposure to loud noise, dust, and heavy equipment
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods
