POSITION SUMMARY

The Volunteer Coordinator plays a key role in supporting a dynamic and impactful volunteer program. Reporting to the Volunteer Program Manager, this position ensures smooth day-to-day operations of volunteer engagement, including recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, and recognition. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and passionate about creating positive experiences for volunteers while supporting the Arboretum’s mission of community, sustainability, learning, and innovation.


WORK SCHEDULE: 

This position requires the ability to work a flexible work schedule, including weekends and occasional evenings. However, the standard work schedule for this full-time position is Sunday through Thursday.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:


Volunteer Engagement & Support

  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and training volunteers for various roles across the garden.
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records in the volunteer management system.
  • Coordinate volunteer schedules and assignments to meet departmental needs.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for volunteer inquiries, providing timely and helpful responses.

Program Administration

  • Support the Volunteer Program Manager in implementing policies and procedures for volunteer engagement.
  • Prepare and distribute volunteer communications, including newsletters, updates, and event invitations.

Recognition & Community Building

  • Help organize volunteer appreciation events and recognition initiatives.
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for volunteers.
  • Gather feedback from volunteers to improve program quality and experience.

Event & Project Support

  • Assist with logistics for volunteer-led events and special projects.
  • Track attendance and participation for volunteer activities.
  • Provide on-site support during volunteer shifts and events as needed.

Requirements

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Associate degree or equivalent experience required, bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 1–3 years of experience in volunteer coordination, customer service, or nonprofit administration.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with volunteer management software a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain positive relationships with volunteers and staff.
  • Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to pass all pre-employment requirements, including a background check and drug screening 

PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES: 

  • Experience in a nonprofit, cultural institution, or community engagement role.
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities.
  • Enthusiasm for nature, sustainability, and mission-driven work.
