Assistant Lands Manager

Position Purpose and Summary

This role supports the TWU Land Manager in helping to train, coordinate and manage GENVs’ 8 ESA lab assistant positions that run in the fall and spring semesters. Under the supervision of the TWU Lands Manager, they aid to promote the public’s education on the importance of environmental diversity and preserving the integrity of the ecosystems found in natural areas around the Langley campus, including the ESA, the Blaauw Eco forest in Glen Valley and the Crow’s Nest on Salt Spring Island. Aid the TWU Lands Manager to ensure the safety of natural pathways within the ESA, contributes to the monitoring efforts of ongoing research, and works with the TWU Land Manager to ensure that services remain properly communicated, safe, and in alignment with all regulatory and organizational standards. This role involves maintaining the environmental integrity of TWU’s natural areas, as stated above, developing research procedures, supporting worker teams, contributing to new project proposals, and representing the TWU Land Manager with professionalism and care in the broader community. This role is ideal for a leader with strong organizational and cooperativity skills, and who will enhance the culture of TWU’s ESA through commitment, effective coordination of both the workers and the many ongoing projects within this dept., by providing encouraging team support, and by building meaningful relationships with the public and involved organizations.

 

Key Areas of Accountability


  • Assist with the Supervisor / TWU Land Manager to assess and maintain environmental quality parameters and species diversity in natural areas around the Langley campus, including the ESA, the Blaauw Eco forest in Glen Valley and the Crow’s Nest on Salt Spring Island. 
  • Work with the TWU Land Manager to manage ongoing environmental projects by coordinating with the dept. and initiating communications with relevant organizations. 
  • Work with the TWU Land Manager to coordinate and assign tasks to the lab assistants and other ESA student workers in a timely manner to ensure clear communication. 
  • Able to independently work with organizations on behalf of Department Supervisor as needed. 
  • To assess and maintain the safety of TWU’s natural areas for both the public and worker safety. 
  • To assist with the cooperation with community groups such as Langley Field Naturalists and Langley Environmental Partners regarding invasive plant management/eradication.
  • To assist with training and assessment of new hires with environmental tools, in the field (in lab and outside research areas) and oversee workers while in the field. 
  • Assist the TWU Land Manager on improving the “outdoor laboratories” of the Ecosystem Study Area on the Langley Campus of TWU, as well as traditional “indoor” laboratory experiments and projects for Environmental Studies-related courses.
  • Assist the TWU Land Manager on infrastructure maintenance, including the trail systems, bridges, boardwalks, educational kiosk frames, Native Plant Garden, fences in the Back-40, and signage across all TWU’s natural areas. 
  • To maintain the cleanliness of TWU’s natural areas by enforcing no littering and keeping waste sites clean. 
  • To assist with the maintenance of environmental quality parameters, ongoing research efforts, and species diversity monitoring of TWU’s natural areas, as stated above.
  • Work on expansion of existing projects and simultaneously organize parameters for new projects. 
  • Enhancing educational websites connected to the ESA by updating information and adding visual references. 
  • Engaging with the community to teach about TWU’s natural areas


The Person

 

Skills and Abilities

  • Prior knowledge and experience in training, coordinating and managing student workers on a day-to-day basis. Creating work plans and schedules, setting work plans and goals and then evaluating the completion of those goals.
  • Prior knowledge and experience working in a team setting within a ‘middle management’ type role; helping set objectives with the upper management and then implementing those objectives to the student workers.
  • Prior knowledge of environmental assessments, including water quality, air quality, and soil components. 
  • Prior knowledge in management and restoration of natural landscapes, maintenance of natural areas with public access, and native species.
  • Prior knowledge in leadership, communication and professionalism. 
  • Ability to identify and quantify species composition within TWU’s natural areas with special emphasis on noting endangered flora and fauna within those communities, using ecological plotting techniques. 
  • Ability to identify other ecological parameters such as soil types, weather conditions, and hydrology. 
  • Ability to continue construction and maintenance of trails on the property, using ecologically sound construction techniques. 
  • Basic skills in web design, use online research applications to create maps/teaching guides, and have an adaptive understanding of technology.

Standards & Requirements


Education

  • Undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies. Biology and Geography majors may also be considered.

 

 

Experience


  • General knowledge of first aid and workers' safety. 
  • Willingness to develop a deeper understanding of natural pathway connections and the importance of maintaining the propriety of TWU’s natural areas through the principles of Christian Stewardship.
