SUMMARY: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The primary duties of a successful Shift Leader are to take full ownership of inventory accuracy, properly plan for each job scheduled throughout the week, oversee quality control in accordance with company control plan standards, manage and review production direct labor, and ensure a safe work environment for all team members. A successful Shift Leader will work and coordinate activities of the employees on his/her shift to meet production targets. The Shift Leader must have a high level of work commitment, attention to detail and the ability to lead, learn and follow plans. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
- Use software to perform material and shop floor-related transactions
- Oversee the usage of all raw materials used in production and ensure the accuracy of material type, weight, and location for materials pulled and returned.
- On a daily basis, labor balances all direct labor at the end of the shift as part of the Work In Process (WIP) procedure of ERP system
- Participate in the development of production plans and follow up to ensure that schedules are met
- Contributes to and ensures implementation of continuous improvement activities
- Assure compliance with quality standards throughout all production operations
- Read technical drawings, reports, and work instructions
- Train, coordinate, and motivate employees, providing feedback on job performance
- Assure compliance with quality standards. Measure components and assemblies as needed
- Consult with the Quality Control Manager regarding acceptance or rejection decisions on components and final assemblies
- Instruct and monitor production employees’ work practices and conformance with procedures
- Contribute to and ensure implementation of continuous improvement and cost-down activities
- Perform performance evaluations on employees annually
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment
- Ensure continuation of operation in the absence of other Supervisors
- Perform daily department walk-through with in coming shift leader to ensure proper shift-to-shift communication
- Perform line operator duties as needed
Requirements
Qualification:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- High School diploma or its equivalent, advanced education preferred
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in plastic extrusion
- Requires the ability to operate a computer, a variety of small hand tools, precision measuring devices, and standard office machines
- Requires a working knowledge of accounting methods and cost control procedures
- Basic reading, writing, math skills, and the reading of technical drawings
- Ability to execute programs supporting improved procedures, processes and equipment to improve quality and maintain costs while increasing manufacturing output.
- Ability to motivate and exchange information with co-workers, and work as part of a team
- Proven success in maintaining and fostering effective working relationships, communicating with key support functions to improve operations, and ensuring effective support of the manufacturing process.
- Reliance on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
- Successfully pass pre-employment drug screen
- Successfully pass pre-employment physical health evaluation
Physical Job Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
- Frequent: Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, lifting (up to 70 lbs), pushing, pulling, and moving items: Requires the ability to move around the plant and maneuver product when necessary
- Frequent: Walking and Standing (up to, but not limited to 8 hours): Requires moving around the plant to perform duties and assist coworkers
- Visual requirements: ability to visually verify parts for quality control due to color and set specifications.
- Identifying and reading reports, labels, and packing materials: Requires recognizing and identifying, and using necessary plans, reports, and other informational resources
- Climbing Ladders: Requires being able to climb a rolling ladder, up to 10 feet
- Use of equipment tools: including hand tools, power tools (i.e., saws), air-driven tools (i.e., stapler), and measuring devices (calipers, measuring cup, bar code measurement tool)
- Ability to operate a forklift: upon completion of in-house certification.
- Wear required safety equipment: when appropriate/necessary/required
- Communication: employee is required to talk and/or hear in a loud work environment.
- Must be able to use hands to handle or touch objects, tools, or controls

Punctuality/Dependability: Adheres to the schedule and comes to work on days when scheduled. This is a salaried position, based upon a 45-hour minimum per week. Hours are subject to change. Occasional Saturdays/Sundays may be required.

Language Skills: ability to read, analyze, and interpret Quality Control Print (QC Print). Ability to accurately complete a Quality Control Plan as well as various other shift paperwork. Ability to document any discrepancies that occur and to communicate this to the required Managers.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Skills: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and present information to the Production Manager.
