Join the team at Jockey Hollow Girl Scout Camp as a Lifeguard and spend your summer making a real impact—keeping campers safe while leading fun waterfront adventures, building confidence, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
At Jockey Hollow, there are 212 pristine acres to explore and enjoy. With a large "L"-shaped swimming pool, Low Ropes Challenge Course and Zip Line, beautiful equestrian center, archery range, playing field, and adventurous hiking trails, the fun is endless!
The Lifeguard will provide campers with organized and educational waterfront programs safely.
Programs include swimming classes and free swim periods.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Attend all sessions required of the position at Pre-Camp Orientation.
- Must follow and enforce all safety rules and regulations of the pool.
- Must follow the guidelines of the American Red Cross in swimming instruction procedures.
- Must be always alert to the campers in the water and their needs.
- Must assist with the buddy system and checks.
- Lead or assist in leading swimming lessons.
- Keep the Pool Director posted on any problems regarding pool procedures.
- Responsible for keeping the pool area clean.
- Responsible for the care and maintenance of pool equipment.
- Takes an active part in all camp activities.
- Assists the Program Director and the unit staff with rainy day programs.
- Must learn and perform emergency procedures effectively.
- Promote high camper and staff moral.
- Maintains an elevated level of efficiency by participating in all scheduled activities, in-service training (ie: practice drills, endurance swimming).
- Must wear a uniform consisting of a bathing suit, shorts, whistle, and identifiable waterfront lifeguard shirt while on duty (the shirt is provided by Jockey Hollow Day Camp).
- Follow all procedures established in the Camp Communicable Disease Plan.
- If 18 years old or older, must be able to stay and sleep over for at least one out of the three overnights.
- Performs other duties as requested by the Pool Director and Camp Director.
Daily Rate: $120 (new staff) - $130 per day (returning staff). This is based on a 7.5 hour work day, which translates to $16.00 - $17.33 per hour respectively.
Requirements
- Minimum Age: 16
- Current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED. A current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED with Waterfront Skills is preferred. Will train.
- Ability to follow directions from the Pool Director and enforce Girl Scout, ACA and NJ Youth Camp Safety procedures.
- Ability to learn and effectively perform emergency procedures.
- Provide instructions and lifeguard for swimming programs.
- Individuals must be safety conscious and have sound judgement.
Physical Requirements
- Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching and ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to swim proficiently and demonstrate water rescue skills in accordance with applicable certification standards.
- Ability to enter and exit the pool quickly and safely, including climbing ladders and navigating wet, slippery surfaces.
- Ability to respond rapidly in emergency situations, including performing water rescues, CPR, and first aid.
- Ability to work outdoors for prolonged periods in varying weather conditions, including heat and humidity.
- Adequate vision (with or without corrective lenses) and hearing to monitor swimmers, identify potential safety hazards, and respond to verbal and auditory signals.
- Must be able to work in a rustic camp environment with limited access to electricity, cell phone service and internet.
