About the Role

Anglo American Australia In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in manganese, as well as copper exploration projects under way in North West Queensland. Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. 

Job Description

Reporting to the General Manager, this is a key site senior leadership role within our Capcoal operation. As Commercial Manager, you will be a critical partner to Operations, accountable for driving financial performance, strengthening governance, and shaping strategic decision-making across the site.

You will lead a high-performing finance function and play a visible role in influencing and impacting outcomes across safety, production and long-term value creation.

Further responsibilities include:-

  • Provide strategic commercial leadership, influencing operational and financial outcomes across the site
  • Partner with operations to optimise performance, cost discipline and value delivery aligned to production strategy
  • Own the site’s financial performance, ensuring robust governance, accurate reporting and full compliance
  • Lead planning, budgeting and forecasting cycles, delivering clear, forward-looking insights to support decision-making
  • Drive data-led performance analysis, identifying risks, opportunities and actionable improvements
  • Lead capital governance and prioritisation, ensuring disciplined investment decisions across the lifecycle
  • Embed a culture of continuous improvement and commercial thinking across site leadership
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Joint Venture partners and key external stakeholders
  • Lead, coach and uplift capability within a high-performing finance team

Qualifications

You will succeed in this role if you ’re a commercially astute finance leader who thrives in a complex, operational environment and enjoys partnering with stakeholders at all levels. Further experience and qualifications:-

  • Degree in Business, Accounting or Economics (CA/CPA highly regarded)
  • Proven financial leadership experience in capital-intensive environments including deep understanding of cost and value drivers, operational performance and site constraints
  • Proven capability in financial modelling, budgeting, forecasting and performance analysis and the ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights that influence senior operational leaders
  • Strong knowledge of accounting standards, governance and internal controls
  • Ability to influence and engage senior stakeholders, including operational leaders, JV Partners and external partners
  • Experience leading teams and building capability in a high-performance culture
  • Advanced capability in financial governance, internal controls and IFRS compliance, across Capex and Opex environments
