Backend Engineer – Access Routing & Trust (ART)

Every request that reaches NN — and there are millions every day — first passes through the platform we build. As a Backend Engineer in the Access Routing & Trust (ART) team, you operate at the edge of our IT landscape, where traffic, security, and performance come together. We decide what gets in, what gets blocked, and exactly where each request needs to go across a diverse environment of cloud and on-premise systems.
But this role goes beyond routing traffic.
Our platform plays a key role in connecting new and existing applications across AWS, private cloud, and Azure environments. This means working with both modern architectures and established systems, solving real integration challenges, and handling edge cases that don’t have textbook solutions. At the same time, we are in the middle of a significant transition. We are moving away from a self-built, on-premise solution towards a modern, cloud-native platform. This gives you the opportunity to shape how we design, build, and operate traffic management going forward.
Looking ahead, we’re also exploring how to make the platform smarter. Think AI-assisted operations, reducing manual work, and moving towards fully automated, self-service capabilities for our internal customers.
If you enjoy working on systems that are critical, complex, and constantly evolving — this is where your work will directly impact the flow of an entire organization.
What you are going to do
- Build, evolve, and operate a platform that processes millions of incoming requests and ensures they are securely and reliably routed to the right destinations
- Work on connecting applications across a complex landscape that spans cloud, private cloud, and existing systems, solving integration challenges along the way
- Design and implement routing and traffic management solutions that are both secure and highly performant under real-world conditions
- Contribute to the transition from legacy systems to a modern, cloud-native platform, helping make key architectural and operational decisions
- Help move the platform toward smarter, more automated operations by exploring AI-supported workflows and enabling self-service capabilities for internal teams
- Continuously improve reliability by strengthening observability, monitoring, and alerting so issues are detected and resolved before users are impacted
- Collaborate closely with application teams, architects, and other platform teams to integrate new services and reduce friction in how traffic flows through the organization
- Take ownership end-to-end: from design and implementation to deployment, operations, and incident response
What we offer you
NN invests in an inclusive, inspiring work environment and in skills and competences for the future. We match this with employee benefits that are in line with what is needed today and in the future. This way, we offer our employees the opportunity to get the best out of themselves. We offer you:
- Salary between €4,527 and €6.036 based on 36 hours and depending on your knowledge and experience
- 13th month and holiday allowance are paid with your monthly salary
- 27 vacation days for a 5-day working week and three Diversity Days
- A modern pension administered by BeFrank
- Plenty of training and learning opportunities
- NS Business Card 2nd class, which gives you unlimited travel, also privately
- Do you prefer to travel with your own transport? Then you can declare the kilometers travelled
- Allowances for setting up your home office and for internet use
Who you are
- You are a natural collaborator who enjoys working across team boundaries and understands that the best solutions emerge from strong alignment and shared ownership
- You bring at least 3 years of hands-on experience with Kubernetes and are comfortable deploying, operating, and troubleshooting containerized workloads in production environments
- You have experience with CI/CD pipelines and strongly believe in automation as the foundation for reliable software delivery
- You have a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, and you are interested in how traffic flows through systems at scale
- You enjoy working with open-source tools and are not afraid to dive into their configuration and behavior to make them work in a specific context
- You care about observability and understand the importance of metrics, logs, and traces in running reliable platforms
- You are comfortable working in complex environments where modern and legacy systems coexist, and you enjoy solving problems that don't have a straightforward answer
- You take initiative, explore unfamiliar territory when needed, and are motivated to continuously improve systems and reduce manual effort
- You value well-structured, secure, and maintainable configurations and code, and you gravitate toward modern engineering practices
Who you will work with
You will join a small, international team consisting of four engineers, a product owner, and an engineering manager.
The team is intentionally small, which means every voice matters and your impact is immediately visible. At the same time, the scope is large: every request entering NN flows through what we build.
We work closely together, challenge each other, and take pride in both our engineering craft and the platform we run. Collaboration extends beyond the team as well — we actively engage with other teams and architects across the organization to ensure our platform fits seamlessly into the bigger picture.
If you enjoy working in a focused, high-impact team where ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement are key, you will feel right at home.
