About Kahnawà:ke Education Center

The mission of the Kahnawà:ke Education Center is to provide the children who live in Kahnawà:ke with a solid and well-rounded education laying the foundation for their future careers. The mission of KEC is carried out by the Kahnawà:ke Combined Schools Committee (KCSC) as well as the administrative arm of KEC. The KEC is responsible for the operation and support of three schools in the Kahnawà:ke community and post-secondary administration.

Position Summary

The main purpose of the Science Consultant role is to support and consult all schools of the Kahnawà:ke school system in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Science Curriculum. In collaboration with members of KEC Curriculum Team and identified staff, the Science Curriculum Consultant develops the Science curriculum and essential learning outcomes to ensure a cohesive Science program from Kindergarten to Grade 11, aligned with the KEC Tsi Niionkwariho:ten Education Program.

Key Responsibilities

      Responsibility 1: Curriculum Development (35%)

  • To develop curriculum guides with a clear scope and sequence across all grades along with the appropriate and culturally relevant instructional strategies and resources.
  • To evaluate, monitor and develop Science essential learning outcomes (ELOs) through approved processes. 
  • To align Science units with the KEC Tsi Niionkwarihò:ten education program.
  • To develop unit plans according to KEC templates and processes.
  • To establish benchmarks and monitor the success of the Science program based on student success. 
  • To recommend new teaching materials (textbooks, resource materials, etc.) to support the implementation of the Science curriculum.
  • To keep abreast of new trends in curriculum development. 

Responsibility 2: Curriculum Implementation (35%)

  • To develop long and short-term plans to ensure fluid implementation of the Science curriculum.
  • To coach and mentor Science teachers by sharing and modeling sound pedagogical practices in alignment with the curriculum guides.
  • To identify and recommend tools, professional development and resources needed to support teachers in implementing the ELOs.
  • To pilot, implement and monitor the Science curriculum, ensuring that the ELOs meet the needs of all students.
  • To implement the use of Science guides and other resources across grade levels. 
  • To promote the integration of Science into other subject areas through project-based, multi-disciplinary, and inquiry-based learning based on the KEC Tsi Niionkwarihò:ten education program.
  • To monitor and support the development and implementation of identified assessment tools to identify curricular gaps. 

      Responsibility 3: Collaboration and Support (30%)

  • To collaborate with curriculum consultants to ensure consistency across disciplines.
  • To collaborate with identified sub-committees, and Science PLC teams as needed.
  • To identify needs required to support the development and implementation of curriculum.
  • To lead or partake in advisory groups relative to their discipline as well as others that support the KEC Tsi Niionkwarihò:ten Education Program.
  • To consult with and collaborate with external resources that will support the development of the curriculum. 
  • To aid teachers in lesson planning by recommending resources and strategies, as well as by modelling instructional strategies (including the use of technology) within classrooms.
  • To lead identified projects and partnerships relevant to this specific area. 
  • To collaborate with educational leaders to develop, maintain and update system-wide strategic plans.
  • To facilitate the exchange of ideas between teachers at different grades and across schools.
  • To support the development and growth of new science and STEM learning spaces (i.e. MakerSpace, Learning Commons, etc.)

  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment when providing services to students and teachers.

Technical Competencies:

Required technical competencies for this position include:

  • Expertise in curriculum development, backward design and vertical planning of curriculum is an asset.
  • Expertise in the use and interpretation of assessment tools (Learning Evaluation Situations, etc.) used to evaluate students in Science.

Education, Knowledge & Experience

  • Master’s Degree in the Teaching of Science (M.Ed) or Curriculum Development with 5 years of experience in teaching Science at the elementary or secondary level or a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in a relevant field of specialization with 8 years of experience teaching Science at the elementary and/or secondary level. 
  • Knowledge of Kanien’kehá:ka teachings and Haudenosaunee worldview is a definite asset.
  • Knowledge of the Kahnawà:ke Education System and/or experience in working with First Nations educational systems is an asset.
  • Complete proficiency in English language, knowledge of Kanien’ kéha and French is an asset.
