About the Role

Maintenance Technician / Handyman (Multi-Site Child Care Centres – BC)

About the Role

Kids & Company is seeking a reliable, skilled, and self-motivated Maintenance Technician / Handyman to support multiple childcare centres throughout British Columbia.

This role is responsible for maintaining safe, clean, and fully operational environments for children, families, and staff. The successful candidate will perform a wide range of maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance tasks, while independently troubleshoot issues and coordinating larger repairs when required.

The ideal candidate has strong hands-on experience with plumbing, carpentry, painting, furniture assembly, general building repairs, and basic electrical troubleshooting. They are organized, responsive, and comfortable managing maintenance requests across multiple locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general maintenance, repairs, and preventative maintenance across multiple childcare centres.
  • Diagnose maintenance issues and determine the most effective repair solution.
  • Complete plumbing-related repairs such as:
    • Repairing leaking sinks and faucets
    • Replacing toilets, toilet seats, flush mechanisms, and bathroom fixtures
    • Clearing minor blockages and addressing basic drainage issues
  • Complete carpentry and woodworking repairs such as:
    • Repairing doors, gates, cabinets, shelving, fences, and playground structures
    • Installing and repairing hardware, hinges, locks, and door closers
  • Perform drywall repairs, patching, painting, and touch-ups.
  • Assemble and install furniture, shelving, storage units, and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot basic electrical issues such as:
    • Replacing light fixtures, bulbs, switches, and outlets
    • Diagnosing lighting and power issues before escalation to a licensed electrician
  • Conduct regular facility inspections and identify maintenance concerns before they become larger issues.
  • Respond to urgent maintenance and safety concerns in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with external contractors and vendors for specialized work beyond the scope of the role.
  • Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and replacement parts.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records within the company's maintenance tracking system, including documenting completed repairs, uploading photos where required, tracking outstanding issues, updating project statuses, and ensuring work orders are closed in a timely manner.
  • Prioritize maintenance requests based on operational impact, health and safety risks, and business needs.
  • Communicate regularly with Centre Directors, Area Directors, and Facilities leadership regarding maintenance status, repair timelines, and outstanding issues.
  • Travel between multiple childcare centres throughout British Columbia as required.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in facility maintenance, property maintenance, or a handyman role.
  • Demonstrated experience completing repairs independently.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Plumbing systems and fixture repairs
    • Carpentry and woodworking
    • Drywall repair and painting
    • Furniture assembly and installation
    • Building maintenance and repair
    • Basic electrical troubleshooting
  • Ability to assess issues, identify root causes, and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Experience using work order, maintenance, or ticket-tracking systems.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and web-based maintenance tracking systems.
  • Ability to accurately document completed work, update maintenance requests, and track project status electronically.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities across several locations.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Valid BC Driver's License.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (CRC) is required as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in childcare centres, schools, healthcare facilities, or other occupied commercial environments.
  • WHMIS certification or other health and safety training.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs.
  • Familiarity with commercial building systems and facility operations.
  • Experience coordinating contractors and vendors.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry maintenance materials and equipment.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and perform physical repair work.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
