Job Purpose: Security Patrol is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for guests, staff, animals, and property by conducting proactive patrols, monitoring systems from the Security Operations Center (SOC), managing bus and vehicle movement, and responding effectively to emergencies. This position requires strong situational awareness, professional communication, and adherence to organizational safety and customer-service standards.
The Security Patrol I position is an entry-level role responsible for learning and performing foundational security duties that support a safe and secure environment for guests, staff, animals, and property. This role focuses on developing core patrol, guest-service, and communication skills while working under close supervision.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Conduct regular foot and vehicle patrols per schedule of all assigned areas to deter and detect unauthorized activity, safety hazards, and equipment malfunctions. Report hazards and incidents identified.
- Secure gates, doors, and restricted areas; ensure compliance with access control procedures.
- Provide visible presence to promote guest confidence and prevent incidents.
- Assist with lost and found, guest directions, and crowd management as needed.
- Document all patrol findings and incidents accurately in the daily log or reporting system.
- Monitor CCTV cameras, alarms, access-control systems, and radio communications for the entire campus, focusing on awareness, observation, and correct communication.
- Under guidance of Security Management and senior security personnel, follow directions during incidents and provide support.
- Maintain situational awareness and ensure proper escalation of incidents to management.
- Track key control, equipment sign-outs, and radio accountability logs.
- Support after-hours access and vendor check-in per established protocols.
- Direct and coordinate guest bus, tram, or shuttle traffic flow during operational hours and special events. Ensure safe pedestrian and vehicle movement through parking and drop-off zones.
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies, animal escape alarms, fires, weather alerts, or other critical incidents under guidance from Security Management and senior security personnel.
- Provide first aid and CPR within level of training; assist medics and first responders on scene.
- Follow established emergency procedures including notifications, evacuations, and crowd management.
- Complete incident reports and daily reports.
- Greet guests and employees courteously and provide assistance while maintaining professional demeanor.
- Work cooperatively with Zoo departments, including Guest Services, Maintenance, and Animal Care, during daily operations and special events.
- Complete all other duties as assigned by Security Management.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Demonstrates reliability and punctuality.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact professionally with the public.
- Basic computer proficiency (security software, incident reporting, Microsoft Office).
- Must be able to stand/walk for extended periods and work in outdoor environments under various weather conditions.
- Ability to sit and monitor CCTV systems for periods of time.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Flexible availability, including weekend, evening, and holiday hours, and rotating shifts.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate security vehicles safely. Must have a valid Georgia driver’s license and a good MVR.
Education and experience level required for position:
- High school diploma or GED required; some college or security training preferred but not required.
- 1 year experience in security, law enforcement, or emergency response desirable but not required.
- Experience in customer service, hospitality preferred.
Driving requirements:
- Must possess a valid Georgia Driver’s License that is acceptable per Zoo Atlanta’s auto liability insurance carrier guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Lift or move up to 50 lbs occasionally.
- Remain on feet for long periods and walk considerable distances.
- Work in variable environmental conditions (heat, cold, rain, wildlife exposure).
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Must be able to work for extended periods and in inclement weather conditions.
