About the Role
Strengthening and empowering all of the communities we serve.
The Oregonian/OregonLive seeks an experienced editor to temporarily help lead our Express News Team, which sits at the center of our daily news operation. The team covers breaking crime and community news while also diving deep into the explanatory and narrative pieces that help readers understand the events unfolding across our metro area.
Reporting to the Public Safety/Express editor, this supervisor shares day-to-day oversight of the team — keeping breaking coverage moving while helping reporters carve out time for deeper work.
This is a temporary position. The pay rate is $30 per hour.
What you'll be doing:
- Drive daily reporting: Assign, edit and publish breaking news with speed, accuracy and strong news judgment; guide iterative updates as stories develop.
- Steer explanatory and narrative work: Coach reporters to identify the stories that merit deeper digging, and help them deliver pieces that give readers context and a human perspective on events in the metro area.
- Develop people: Draw out the best work from a talented mix of early-career and experienced journalists; provide direct feedback that sharpens reporting, writing, sourcing and story framing.
- Bring creativity: Encourage smart risk-taking in story forms and in how we convey information to readers, including responsible use of emerging tools.
- Partner with the lead editor: Share coverage planning and shift coordination with the Public Safety/Express editor, and step in to keep the team running smoothly when needed.
Our ideal candidate will have the following:
- Prior professional newsroom experience, including editing
- Strong understanding of best practices in digital journalism, including effective presentation and headlines.
- Strong news judgment and a clear sense for stories: what matters now, what will matter next, and what deserves more attention.
- Calm, confident leadership in fast-moving situations; high standards for accuracy, fairness and urgency.
- Prior experience coaching journalists to do their best work is preferred
- A strong understanding of public records and data, and how they can elevate both breaking and enterprise coverage is a plus
