At Equinix, our Critical Facilities Engineers operate, manage, maintain, and repair critical and non-critical power systems, HVAC, BMS, plumbing, fire control & suppression, and all site services. Our critical facilities specialists also perform all related vendor support in a mission critical environment.  

This role will be suitable for an individual with positive attitude who is willing to support the site supervisor, getting involved in all technical, operational and customer related aspects. A strong electrical background (from a mission critical environment ideally) is preferred, but an overall engineering mindset, ability to work across all engineering disciplines will also be highly desired.

As the critical facilities engineers work in a highly collaborative environment, a team-first mindset will be crucial in navigating through the workdays - especially in a small team of 2 at AE1 where the supervisor and engineer will work side-by-side daily on all aspects on the role.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Completes all maintenance protocols, plans, activities on time and accurately, including daily, weekly, and monthly site checks. 

  • Manage and oversee specialist vendors for all major works, planned repairs and maintenance to electrical systems

  • Performs minor changes to mechanical, controls and special systems if necessary.   

  • Ensures that sufficient spare parts are available on site for frequently used parts or parts with long lead times and maintains critical spares register.  

  • Monitors for and responds to BMS (Building Monitoring System) alarms in accordance with engineering policies and procedures, escalating to and working with Controls Engineering team where required.  

  • Participate in an on-call roster to act as the first responder for sites’ incidents, managing, resolving, and/or escalating critical issues outside of regular working hours.

  • Oversee plumbing and fire suppression systems vendor activities. 

  • Coordinates/oversee work with vendors to ensure that maintenance activities are carried out as per Equinix's requirements.

  • Commissioning and project work that will vary in scale and scope over time. 

  • Edits and tracks the work approval process for service providers (including briefing at the start of work, control of work during the day, final review of the work carried out).

  • Recommend changes/updates to technical files for plants and equipment in cooperation with vendor, and the supervisors, ensuring as built are up to date. 

  • Creates engineering scripts (switching schedules) and undertake safe switching practice. 

  • Ensures that all Equinix safety standards are followed, as well quality procedures related to maintenance, including all Incident Management.

  • Reviews processes, procedures, systems. Communicates process deviations and proposed changes to a higher level so that relevant follow-up measures can be carried out.

  • Develops training and supports training of other IBX (International Business Exchange) employees in relevant engineering topics and processes.

  • Provides guidance and mentoring to other team members while being mentored on any areas of improvement.

Qualifications, key skills, and attributes required:  

  • Strong understanding through practical experience of critical facility operations, particularly electrical systems and infrastructure

  • Trade qualification or Degree Certified  

  • Sound knowledge or understanding of HVAC / Controls / Telco (desired) 

  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing complex mechanical and electrical systems. 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in time-sensitive situations. 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. 

  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload effectively. 

  • Capability to execute tasks through effort and collaboration without formal written process.

  • Be capable of acquiring NV1 Security Clearance.

  • Collaborative mindset but also with the drive to complete assigned tasks autonomously when required.
