Accommodation | Ngā Wharenoho at The University of Auckland is recruiting approximately 100 Resident Advisers | Kaitohutohu Wharenoho to join our passionate, supportive and motivated team.
Our university residences provide a safe, secure and supportive place for students to live and learn while attending the University of Auckland. Accommodation | Ngā Wharenoho is managed by a team of professional staff whose key purpose is to ensure the pastoral care and support to the academic efforts of residents. Resident Advisers | Kaitohutohu Wharenoho form a vital part of this team. We believe in our adopted whakatauki “He waka eke noa” and working together as a successful, innovative, hardworking team.
The role of a Resident Adviser | Kaitohutohu Wharenoho is as a leader and resource for our residents within the community, focusing on community development, being a referral agent and a peer support, with the primary purpose of creating a sense of belonging. We know that having a “good RA” can make a huge difference to a student’s University experience, and our RA team are an integral part of the residential experience, delivering support to the wellbeing and success of our residents.
Resident Advisers support Accommodation’s commitment to creating inclusive communities, adhering to the university’s code of conduct, the Residential Rules and incorporating the vision of Taumata Teitei & Nga Wharenoho Kaupapa into the role. Our RA’s role model behaviours we seek to encourage in all of our residents: being engaged, kind, empathetic and solution orientated, respectful and accepting, and encouraging healthy connections.
The primary goal of the RA is the development of an environment conducive to the personal and academic growth of all residents.
Reporting to the Resident Manager/Resident Coordinator, the position is part-time, live-in, and fixed-term. Our 2027 RA's will work 15 or 17 hours per week from February 2027 to November/December 2027 depending on the residence.
Note: Positions are available in our First-Year School Leaver Halls and our Undergraduate and Postgraduate Residences

As a Resident Adviser | Kaitohutohu Wharenoho, you will:
- Support students in their residence to make their time productive, meaningful and enjoyable
- Nurture the development of both academic achievement and life skills
- Be a “people person” with good communication skills who builds a strong sense of community in their residence
- Be a positive role model
Applications are invited from students who intend to be enrolled in a full-time course of study at The University of Auckland. The successful appointees will be required to live in the accommodation allocated to them and fulfil their responsibilities for the full period of their contract, which falls beyond the academic year.
Our successful applicants will meet the below requirements:
- Has a high level of academic and personal achievement
- Is responsible, approachable, with a “can do” attitude
- Understands the importance of adhering to role expectations and responsibilities
- Has good communication skills - both verbal and written
- Intends to be enrolled at the University of Auckland in 2027
- Is happy to live-in (onsite) at the hall/residence you are appointed to and pay accommodation fees
- Can fulfil the entire period of the employment agreement
