Summary: The purpose of this position is to administer and oversee the enforcement of applicable fire safety codes and related regulations. The role is responsible for establishing and managing daily operational procedures to conduct field inspections and ensure compliance with fire safety standards.
Essential Job Functions: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Conducts inspections of buildings, structures, and equipment to identify fire hazards and ensure compliance with applicable local ordinances and state fire safety regulations.
- Inspects and directs the servicing, repair, or replacement of fire protection systems and equipment, including sprinklers and fire extinguishers.
- Reviews and issues permit storage, handling, and use of hazardous and flammable materials.
- Evaluates premises for potential combustion hazards and unsafe conditions.
- Prepare detailed reports documenting violations, findings, and corrective actions.
- Communicates identified hazards and required corrective measures to property owners, occupants, and/or managers.
- Issues summonses for non-compliance and enforces fire codes and regulations when corrective actions are not taken.
- Maintains accurate records and documentation of inspections, permits, and enforcement activities.
- Perform duties under the supervision and direction of the Fire Official.
- Demonstrates adaptability and the ability to manage changing priorities while performing additional duties as assigned.
- Appears in court as required in connection with issued summonses and other legal matters related to fire inspection activities.
Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Preferred minimum of five (5) years of related experience in one or more of the following areas, or a combination thereof: (a) service as a firefighter in a paid or volunteer fire department; (b) inspection of buildings for fire hazards and enforcement of applicable fire safety codes and regulations; (c) investigation of fires to determine origin and cause; (d) inspection of building construction and review of plans and specifications to ensure compliance with fire protection codes and regulations; and/or (e) installation of fire protection equipment.
- Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
- Must possess a valid Fire Inspector or Fire Official certification issued by the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with relevant database systems.
- Must possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, free of motor vehicle convictions for the past three (3) years.
