About the Role

JOB SUMMARY:

Assists nursing and center personnel in pre-op and recovery include bed making, stocking linen and removing soiled linen, removing trash and sharps containers, cleaning up spills, escorting patients to their transportation, taking vital signs, stocking, cleaning and limited clerical work.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Assists nursing personnel in all areas of the GI Unit areas as directed by R.N.

1. Assists in the admission process as directed by the R.N such as helping patients dress and taking vital signs.

2. Assists in the discharge process by assisting patients to dress, and/or escorting to their mode of transportation.

3. Cleans stretchers and all patient contact items between patients as well as other light housekeeping duties as required. This includes but is not limited to ensuring proper disposal of garbage and linen in all areas, cleaning, restocking the staff lounges, cleaning ice scoops and all cleaning duties performed according to proper policies /procedures.

4. Demonstrates understanding of unit patient flow by ensuring efficient and safe movement and placement of stretchers throughout unit.

5. Clerical work as requested by the R.N.

6. Restocks supplies in the Pre-op/PACU areas

7. Distribution of linen and ordering as directed.

B. Demonstrates effective communication skills.

1. Reports to charge nurse/manager when leaving and returning to work area.

2. Demonstrates tact, respect, and courtesy when dealing with other health team members.

3. Responds to patients in a kind, sympathetic manner to patients.

4. Utilizes constructive means to avoid friction.

5. Promotes an atmosphere of mutual trust, acceptance and respect.

6. Uses good judgement in reporting serious or questionable matters.

C. Complies with safety and emergency procedures consistent with Center policy.

1. Demonstrated knowledge of the fire emergency procedure and disaster plan.

a. Completes mandatory in-services including fire safety review and disaster plan review annually.

2. Reports unusual occurrences to charge nurse/manager

3. Responds and participates in emergency situations/drills appropriately. 

4. Maintains a hazard free environment.

5. Utilizes proper techniques and body mechanics when performing lifting duties.

6. Initiates actions to protect the patient, self, and others from environmental hazards.

D. Complies with all Center policies including respecting the privacy and confidentiality of the patient.

1. Complies with personnel policies.

2. Maintains personal absenteeism at 3% or less excluding holidays and vacation time.

3. Complies with proper procedure for sickness, absenteeism, lateness, overtime, and special requests for time off per policy

4. Complies with departmental dress code coming into the building, at work and leaving the building.

5. Demonstrates flexibility in working hours and days scheduled in order to meet unit needs.

E. Participates in unit cost containment measures.

1. Utilizes supplies safely and economically.

2. Utilizes work time productively.

F. Personal Conduct.

1. Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual actions.

2. Respects the dignity, rights, and confidentiality of all individuals regardless of social or economic status, personal attributes, or nature of health problems.

G. Education.

1. Assumes responsibility for professional growth.

a. Keeps abreast of changing Center and departmental policy, procedure, protocol and guidelines.

b. Participates in in-service educational programs.

c. Completes monthly mandatory staff education month before annual performance evaluation.

H. Performs other duties as deemed necessary.

Requirements

QUALIFICATION (EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE)

Education:  High School graduate or equivalent

License/Certification:   Current CPR Certification

Experience:  Minimum of 1 to 2 years hospital or surgery center experience
