Structural Welder Trainee – Bollinger Bootcamp

Position Summary
The Structural Welder Trainee participates in a structured workforce development training program designed to prepare individuals for entry-level employment as Structural Welder. Structural Welder Trainees receive classroom instruction and hands-on training in welding fundamentals, shipyard safety, blueprint reading, measuring and layout, material preparation, fit-up, tack welding, grinding, and basic welding techniques used in structural fabrication and ship construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend all scheduled classroom instruction, laboratory, and hands-on training sessions.
- Follow all OSHA, company and shipyard safety policies and procedures.
- Learn basic welding theory, terminology and structural fabrication concepts.
- Identify and safely use hand tools, power tools measuring devices, and welding equipment.
- Learn how to identify and correct basic weld defects.
- Read and interpret basic blueprints, weld symbols, fabrication drawings, and work instructions.
- Learn proper material preparation, layout, fit-up, and tack welding techniques.
- Perform gouging, grinding, cleaning and preparing metal surfaces for welding.
- Practice basic welding processes under supervision, such as SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, or other assigned methods.
- Keep work areas clean, organized and compliant with safety standards.
- Work effectively as part of a team.
- Accept coaching and constructive feedback from instructors and supervision.
- Demonstrate professionalism, dependability and a positive attitude.
- Successfully complete written examinations, practical assessments, and required certifications.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Ability to read, write and understand basic English.
- Basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, measurements, and basic geometry.
- Structural Welding Career Technical Education, Community College, Trade School, Military Welding Program, or equivalent preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong attention to detail, problem solving skills, work ethic and reliability.
- Ability to learn and apply basic welding techniques.
- Ability to work safely in an industrial environment.
- Effective communication skills, including ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Mechanical and technical aptitude is preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods, climb ladders/scaffolding, lift up to 50 pounds,
- Ability to bend, kneel, climb, crawl and work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
- Manual dexterity to handle tools, materials, and welding equipment
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment including welding helmet, gloves, safety glasses and protective clothing.
- Ability to tolerate heat, noise, sparks, fumes and other industrial conditions associated with welding work.
