Field Officer Civil Maintenance (Backhoe)

We’re seeking a skilled Backhoe Operator with civil maintenance experience to join the Field Services (Civil Maintenance) team, where you’ll play a key role in delivering safe, efficient and high-quality outcomes in accordance with council standards.
Reporting to the Team Leader Civil Maintenance, this is a hands-on role working closely with the concrete crew, primarily responsible for boxing out and preparing sites for concrete works across footpaths, kerbs and associated infrastructure. The role also contributes across creek, drainage and other civil maintenance activities, in line with operational priorities.
Based in Golden Grove, the Civil Maintenance team delivers planned and reactive works across footpaths, kerbs, paving and stormwater assets—helping keep the city’s streets, reserves and public spaces safe, accessible and well maintained.
You will be rostered on a 9-day fortnight schedule, optimising your work time while offering flexibility.
Key responsibilities of the role:
- Operate a backhoe safely and efficiently to support civil maintenance works across Council
- Carry out boxing out of concrete and paving works including footpaths and kerbs.
- Assist with excavation, backfilling, reinstatement and general civil works
- Complete pre-start checks and look after plant and equipment
- Set up and maintain temporary traffic management and general site safety controls
- Perform creek and waterway maintenance including erosion control, vegetation management, and sediment removal
- Work safely in and around civil plant and equipment including backhoes, excavators, and tipper trucks
- Complete site risk assessments and following councils WHS procedures
- Work flexibly across teams and support apprentices or new staff where required

You take pride in delivering high-quality work and working safely at all times. You’re a dependable, team-oriented operator with solid hands-on civil maintenance experience and a practical, safety-first approach to getting the job done right.
To be successful in the role, you will have:
- Work Safely in the Construction Industry (White Card)
- A Work Zone Traffic Management (WZTM) or Temporary Traffic Management Implementor 1 (TMI1) and Traffic Controller 1 (TC1) ticket
- Current South Australian Class HR licence
- Willingness to undergo a pre-employment medical and national police check

Salary range is between $76,590 to $77,848 per annum, plus superannuation guarantee and will be negotiated commensurate with skills, experience and qualifications.
