About the Role
<p><strong>About the team:</strong></p> <p>The Communications Squad is responsible for powering all self-service communications across SumUp—including SMS, email, push notifications, and WhatsApp. Today, we deliver around one billion messages every year, and we have bold plans to significantly increase both the scale and sophistication of our messaging in the years ahead. Alongside messaging, we also work on user-facing capabilities such as promotions and personalized recommendations.</p> <p>As part of the Platform Tribe, we are one of several squads building and owning the systems that enable product teams across SumUp to move faster. This means we design for two audiences at once: our internal teams who depend on our platform, and the millions of merchants they serve.</p> <p>To thrive in this role, we’re looking for someone excited to dive deep into a product domain while navigating the engineering challenges of a high-volume, high-impact service. We’re working on mission-critical infrastructure with substantial room for expansion, so striking the right balance between robust engineering and thoughtful feature delivery is key to success.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>What you’ll do:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Build, deploy, and evolve high-impact services within our Messaging and Promotions domain, using Go to deliver fast, reliable, and scalable solutions</li> <li>Boost system reliability by driving best practices in monitoring, alerting, and traceability—and by shaping the tooling that empowers our engineering teams</li> <li>Influence the future of our microservices architecture, contributing to key decisions that balance scalability, flexibility, and an exceptional developer experience</li> <li>Collaborate closely with product, design, and other engineering teams to craft solutions that are not only technically sound but also meaningful for our merchants</li> <li>Mentor fellow engineers, sharing your expertise and helping foster a culture of curiosity, growth, and continuous improvement</li> <li>Champion high standards of code quality and security, ensuring that our systems are safe, maintainable, and built for long-term success</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>You’ll be great for this role if you have:</strong></p> <ul> <li>4+ years of experience building and maintaining high-traffic backend systems, with a deep understanding of reliability, scalability, and performance</li> <li>Hands-on experience with Go (Golang) and a passion for writing clean, maintainable, and efficient code</li> <li>A strong commitment to code quality, including robust test automation, linting, and formatting best practices</li> <li>Expertise in designing and building APIs, especially RESTful services that are intuitive, secure, and scalable</li> <li>Practical experience with observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, and Honeycomb, and an understanding of how to use them to create reliable, production-ready systems</li> <li>A product-oriented mindset, with the ability to think beyond code and deliver solutions that create real value for users</li> <li>Experience mentoring or coaching teammates, supporting their growth and contributing to a collaborative, learning-driven engineering culture</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Why you should join SumUp:</strong></p> <p>🌍 Opportunity to work with SumUppers globally on large-scale fintech products used by millions of businesses worldwide, from our Berlin office.
