About the Role
Description
Position Summary
The CMM Inspector/Programmer is responsible for performing high-precision dimensional inspections on machined components using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) and other metrology tools. This role supports a machine shop environment, ensuring parts meet engineering drawings, tolerances, GD&T requirements, and customer specifications. The position includes creating and modifying CMM programs, generating inspection reports, and collaborating closely with machinists and production to resolve quality issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Program, set up, and operate CMM equipment for first article, in-process, and final inspections in a machine shop setting.
- Create and optimize CMM programs from 2D blueprints and 3D CAD models.
- Use precision measurement tools including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, pins, blocks, and surface plates.
- Interpret and apply GD&T standards
- Review engineering drawings and communicate inspection results to machinists, engineers, and leadership.
- Perform First Article Inspections (FAI) and generate reports (AS9102 if applicable).
- Document inspection data and maintain traceability records for quality control.
- Support nonconformance investigations and corrective action activities as needed.
- Maintain calibration status and proper care of inspection equipment and fixtures.
- Assist in process improvement efforts to enhance machining accuracy and repeatability.
- Work efficiently in a fast-paced production environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
Preferred:
- Experience with CMM software such as PC-DMIS, Zeiss Calypso, Mitutoyo MCOSMOS, or equivalent.
- Experience performing AS9102 First Article documentation.
- Background in aerospace, defense, medical, or similar high-tolerance machining.
- ISO 9001 or AS9100 environment experience.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and work around production machines for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. and handle small, machined components.
- Work performed in a machining and quality lab environment with PPE required.

- Minimum 2–3 years of experience programming and operating CMM equipment in a machine shop or precision machining environment.
- Strong working knowledge of GD&T.
- Ability to read and interpret complex engineering blueprints.
- Experience using standard metrology and inspection tools.
- Proficient computer and report-writing skills.
- Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
