As a Lifeguard, you’ll be the heartbeat of our pool—creating a safe, welcoming, and fun environment for everyone by enforcing pool protocols, supporting daily operations, and keeping our aquatic spaces running smoothly. As a Swim Instructor, you’ll help swimmers of all ages and abilities build confidence in the water through engaging, supportive, and fun lessons that make a real impact.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Open and close the pool, depending on shift time, following protocol outlined in the Staff Manual.
  • Caution participants regarding safe vs. unsafe behaviors; enforce all safety protocols.
  • Rescue participants in danger of drowning; administer first-aid/CPR if required.
  • Complete accident reports thoroughly if accidents occur and follow protocol outlined in Staff Manual.
  • Substitute for coworkers as needed.
  • Perform work on weekends and evenings as needed to meet scheduling needs.
  • Teach group and private/semi-private swim lessons to beginner through advanced swim students.
  • Modify swim lessons to adapt to each swim students age and swim level.
  • Maintain timeliness with each swim lesson and follow pool schedule closely.
  • Write individual evaluations for each swimmer in the swim class and discuss student progress with guardians.
  • Support the emotional and social wellbeing of swim students through positive behavior management and supportive interactions.
  • Follow all emergency procedures at the SJCC.
  • Attend required staff training and meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Requirements

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


Education/Experience:

  •  Swimming experience. 

Training and Certifications:

  •  Current Lifeguard and First Aid certification or national equivalent, or willing to complete courses by required deadline(s). 
  •  Current CPR/AED Certification (Adult and Pediatric), or willing to complete course by required deadline(s). 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  •  Ability to swim 300 yards freestyle, breaststroke, sidestroke or a combination of these strokes without stopping. 
  •  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
  •  Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with diverse populations. 
  •  Knowledge of relevant safety practices. 
  •  Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with colleagues and SJCC guests. 
  •  Ability to work effectively independently and in a team setting. 
  •  Ability to exercise good judgment.

Physical Demands: To perform the job, the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, walk, swim, paddle, and stand. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, climb, balance, kneel, bend, crouch, crawl, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to lift, push, and/or pull persons or equipment over 100 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.


Environmental Conditions: The work is frequently performed around or in a pool facility, with a moderate noise level. Surfaces are frequently slippery and wet.
