Job Summary: The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is responsible for performing welding inspections and quality verification activities in support of Whirlwind Steel’s manufacturing operations. The CWI also writes and maintains Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) used for all manufacturing welding processes. The requirements, testing and verification of production welders to established codes is the responsibility of the CWI. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that fabricated steel components meet applicable welding codes, customer specifications, and internal quality standards. The CWI works closely with production and quality teams to provide inspection services that add value to the manufacturing process while supporting efficiency and maintaining the highest levels of product integrity and safety.


Key Responsibilities:

· Qualify welders and machine operators to SAW, FCAW, GMAW, and MCAW processes

· Perform visual inspection of welded structural steel components in accordance with AWS and applicable code requirements

· Verify weld quality, fit-up, joint preparation, and workmanship throughout fabrication processes

· Interpret welding symbols, blueprints, and project specifications to ensure compliance

· Document inspection results accurately and maintain quality records as required

· Support nondestructive testing (NDT) activities as needed, including coordination with UT/MT providers

· Assist with identification and documentation of nonconforming weldments or fabrication issues

· Participate in corrective action processes by providing inspection findings and recommendations

· Work collaboratively with production teams to resolve quality concerns without unnecessary disruption to workflow

· Maintain familiarity with Whirlwind’s Quality Systems Manual and ensure adherence to quality procedures

· Support internal and external audits by providing inspection documentation and technical input

Requirements

Qualifications:

· Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification required

· Experience inspecting structural steel fabrication in a manufacturing environment preferred

· Strong knowledge of AWS D1.1, D1.3 and other applicable welding codes and standards

· Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, and specifications

· Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship

· Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting and documentation

· Ability to recruit, mentor, and manage inspectors with nondestructive testing methods (UT, MT, PT) is a plus

Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment while maintaining safety and quality standards
