Guided by our values of accessibility, compassion, dignity, equity, and a housing-first approach, we meet people where they are — without judgment — and, through strong community partnerships, help bridge service gaps so every person we serve can take the next step toward stability and hope.
About the Role

Description

Help Create Safety, Stability, and Support for Our Community

At Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS), we believe everyone deserves safety, dignity, and a place to begin again.

We’re looking for dependable, compassionate, and team-oriented Shelter Support Staff to help maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming environment for individuals experiencing homelessness.

This is an active, fast-paced role where no two days are the same. If you enjoy helping people, staying busy, and being part of a mission-driven team, this could be a great fit for you.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you’ll be one of the first points of contact for clients entering the shelter. Your work helps ensure the campus operates safely and efficiently while clients receive the support they need.

You’ll:

• Welcome new clients and assist with shelter intakes
• Explain shelter guidelines and help orient clients to the campus
• Provide information, referrals, and general assistance to clients
• Perform daily client check-ins using the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS)
• Respond to client needs and escalate concerns to supervisors or case managers when necessary
• Assist with preparing beds and client spaces for new arrivals
• Monitor shelter areas and conduct walk-throughs to maintain safety and order
• Answer phones and assist visitors entering the facility
• Assist with receiving and distributing donations
• Maintain hygiene supply inventory and distribute items to clients as needed
• Support meal service setup when applicable
• Assist with laundry operations and linen distribution
• Document client interactions and incidents in HMIS

Your work helps ensure clients feel supported while maintaining a safe and respectful shelter environment.

Keeping the Shelter Running Smoothly

You’ll also:

• Conduct safety checks of sleeping areas and common spaces
• Address facility concerns such as spills, hazards, or maintenance issues
• Communicate important updates between shifts
• Prepare incident reports and shift summaries
• Collaborate with other CASS departments and community partners
• Participate in team meetings and trainings

Every shift plays an important role in maintaining a safe and stable environment for the people we serve.

Who You Are

You may be a great fit if you:

• Enjoy working directly with people from diverse backgrounds
• Stay calm and professional in fast-paced environments
• Communicate clearly and respectfully
• Can manage multiple responsibilities during busy shifts
• Are dependable, organized, and detail-oriented
• Work well as part of a team focused on helping others

Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness or in social services is a plus but not required.

Work Environment

This is an active role in a client-facing shelter environment. Staff regularly move throughout the campus assisting clients and monitoring shelter operations.

The position requires the ability to:

• Stand and walk for extended periods
• Move between buildings across campus
• Lift and move items up to 25 pounds occasionally
• Climb up to four flights of stairs as part of routine shelter monitoring and operations

Schedule

Shelter operations run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Schedules consist of four 11-hour shifts per week, which may include:

• Weekends
• Holidays
• Overnight or evening shifts depending on assignment
