About the Role

Description


The Director of People and Culture serves as the senior leader responsible for developing and executing human resource strategy in support of the overall business plan and strategic direction of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. This includes leadership in succession planning, talent management, organizational development, performance management, training and development, and benefits and compensation. The role ensures alignment between people practices and the organization’s mission, business goals, and long-term strategy.


The SPCO seeks a collaborative and empathetic leader who values partnership, open communication, and thoughtful problem-solving.  As a department of one, this role works closely with a creative, mission-driven team of musicians, staff, and board leaders, helping foster a supportive workplace culture where people and artistry can thrive. The Director of People and Culture will serve as a trusted advisor across the organization, bringing both strategic insight and a people-centered approach to their work.


Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Human Resources Leadership

  • Partner with senior leadership on organizational design, workforce planning, and leadership development.
  • Ensure HR policies, procedures, and the employee handbook reflect current employment laws and best practices.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to managers and employees on performance management, conflict resolution, corrective action , and career development.
  • Foster a positive organizational culture through employee engagement initiatives and leadership support.
  • Shape policies, programs, and everyday practices to ensure our culture remains inclusive, equitable, and inspiring.

Talent Management & Employee Development

  • Lead recruitment and hiring processes to attract and retain high-quality staff and musicians, with intentional efforts to increase diversity in our hiring.
  • Oversee performance management systems, including annual review processes.
  • Maintain job descriptions and support professional development initiatives.
  • Coordinate onboarding and benefits orientation for new employees.

Compensation, Benefits & Compliance

  • Oversee compensation strategy, including market analysis and salary surveys.
  • Administer employee benefits programs and manage annual renewals and open enrollment.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage leave administration, including legally protected leaves and Minnesota Paid Family Leave.
  • Oversee retirement plans, COBRA administration, workers’ compensation claims, and unemployment claims.

Payroll, HR Systems & Administration

  • Direct HRIS and payroll system administration and ensure accurate payroll processing.
  • Maintain employee records and ensure compliance with applicable recordkeeping requirements.
  • Provide guidance on payroll matters and oversee year-end payroll processes including W-2 distribution.
  • Serve as payroll backup support when needed.

Organizational Leadership & Labor Relations

  • Serve on the senior leadership team, advising on HR strategy and organizational matters.
  • Support labor relations and participate in collective bargaining negotiations as needed.
  • Lead internal employee communications, including regular all-staff meetings.
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Board Human Resources Committee.
  • Develop and manage the HR budget.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources management, business administration, or similar relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • SPHR certification required.
  • Eight to ten years of Human Resources experience including employee relations, staffing, compensation, and benefits administration.
  • HR experience in a union environment preferred, including contract negotiation and administration.
  • Empathy, active listening, and the ability to navigate sensitive topics with care.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence and ability to build trust across diverse teams.
  • Experience leading or contributing to DEIB initiatives, employee resource groups, or culture-building programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and leadership skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Experience in a mission-driven nonprofit organization preferred.
  • Experience with automated payroll systems required; Paylocity preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Interest in music or the arts is a plus.
