The Opportunity

Our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility is looking for a Mechanical Fitter in our Plate Mill-Roll Shop team based in Port Kembla. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.

The Roll Shop is a dedicated department responsible for maintaining rollers used at our Plate Mill to hot roll steel slabs into plates of steel. These rollers, ranging from 1t to 30t, experience wear and tear and have a challenging life. Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize the maintenance of these rollers and surrounding equipment to ensure ongoing steel production.

You will join a cross-functional team that ensures equipment is maintained to the highest standards to meet our objectives for quality and reliability. In this critical role, you will be able to use your technical background and experience to deliver key outcomes, whilst ensuring your safety and that of your colleagues are a priority.

What Will You Do?

In this hands-on role, you will ensure that equipment is maintained to the highest standards to meet our objectives for safety, quality and reliability. You will apply your mechanical fitting skills and experience to complete both complex and routine maintenance tasks. You will do the following:

  • grinding of Finishing Mill and Roughing Mill work and back-up rolls
  • assembly of Roughing Mill work rolls and Skin Pass Mill work rolls
  • changing chucks for Finish Mill work rolls and Roughing Mill work rolls
  • using fine skills in measurement and assessment
  • testing of defects in rolls
  • isolating equipment and performing maintenance   
  • inspecting quality critical equipment and fault finding 
  • resolving issues and fixing any non-conformances 
  • seeking ways to continuously improve our maintenance strategies  

More About You

You will have a strong technical background with the ability to work effectively and flexibly in a team environment. You will also have:

  • mechanical trade qualifications
  • experience within a maintenance function
  • experience working both independently and as part of a manufacturing team 
  • strong attention to detail with the ability to resolve issues effectively and efficiently 
  • a commitment to your own safety and wellbeing and care for others
