Description
The Food Service Worker is responsible for preparing, portioning, and serving menu items for general and modified patient diets, as well as supporting retail food service and catering operations. This role ensures meals are assembled and delivered in accordance with established menus, presentation standards, and portion control guidelines.
The Food Service Worker maintains a clean, safe, and sanitary environment while supporting food preparation, service, and kitchen operations in compliance with safety and infection control policies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Food Preparation and Service
Prepare, portion, and serve food items for patient meals, retail operations, and catering services.
Assemble meals according to menu selections, presentation standards, and portion control guidelines.
Set up and maintain meal service stations.
Assist with basic food production tasks, including potential training in cooking and baking.
Inventory and Supply Management
Receive and store food deliveries in appropriate storage areas.
Requisition ingredients from storage areas based on menu and recipe requirements.
Label and date food items in accordance with food safety standards.
Follow FIFO (First In, First Out) protocols for food storage and usage.
Sanitation and Safety
Maintain clean and sanitary food preparation areas and equipment.
Wash dishes, flatware, and utensils using commercial dishwashing equipment.
Clean and sanitize work areas, including tables, counters, walls, floors, and equipment.
Remove and dispose of trash; clean trash containers regularly.
Follow all infection control and food safety procedures, including proper hand hygiene and use of protective equipment.
Monitor and record food and equipment temperatures in accordance with regulatory standards.
Identify and report safety hazards or concerns.
Equipment Operation and Transport
Operate kitchen and food service equipment, including dishwashers and food preparation tools.
Transport food carts to patient care units and other areas throughout the facility.
Customer Service and Communication
Provide excellent customer service to patients, staff, and guests.
Address and report food quality issues, service concerns, and customer feedback.
Communicate recommendations for service and operational improvements.
Cash Handling (as applicable)
Operate a cash register to process and verify payments for food and services.
Additional Responsibilities
Perform other related duties as assigned to support food service operations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience
One (1) year of food service experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to read, write, and follow instructions.
Strong customer service and communication skills (verbal and written).
Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Basic computer skills, including logging into systems, checking email, and completing required online training modules.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
