Summer Residential Counselor – Upward Bound Program

Pay: $2,500-4,000 Annually

Upward Bound is a federally funded college access program that helps students build academic skills, confidence, and a sense of community while preparing for post-secondary education. As a Summer Residential Counselor, you’ll play a key role in mentoring students, supporting their academic progress, and helping create a safe, engaging residential experience.

Responsibilities

Student Support & Mentorship

  • Provide 24-hour supervision and support for program participants during the residential summer program.

  • Serve as a mentor, role model, and positive influence for students at all times.

  • Assist, counsel, and guide scholars as they navigate academic and personal challenges.

  • Enforce all program rules and maintain a safe, respectful environment.

Academic Assistance

  • Tutor students in academic subjects and help them develop effective study skills.

  • Assist with Summer Reading, AP coursework, college essay writing, and seminar classes.

  • Facilitate study hall and ensure scholars complete and prioritize assignments.

  • Plan and teach an elective class during the program.

Residential & Program Activities

  • Supervise students in the dormitory and monitor evening routines.

  • Plan and lead recreational and community-building activities such as workshops, field day, group activities, and special events.

  • Assist with dormitory operations, including check-in/check-out procedures and facility upkeep.

  • Support meal supervision and documentation for the food program.

Team Collaboration

  • Attend staff meetings, counselor lunch meetings, and weekly supervisor check-ins.

  • Complete program evaluation forms, including self-evaluations and scholar feedback.

  • Maintain communication with staff via walkie-talkie or phone during program hours.

  • Assist with preparation and facilitation of the end-of-year banquet.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree preferred

  • Completion of two years of college strongly preferred

  • 0–3 years of related experience working with youth or in education programs

  • Valid driver’s license (Class C or D)

  • Ability to remain on campus during residential program hours
