Aroostook Mental Health Services, Inc. (AMHC) was founded in 1964 as a non-profit community mental health center. The agency has been a provider of behavioral health (BH) and related services to adults and children in rural Maine for nearly 60 years. Today the agency is the largest behavioral healthcare provider in the region with nearly 30 service locations across Aroostook, Washington and Hancock counties offering an array of mental health, substance use, crisis, sexual assault, prevention, and brain injury services (Aroostook). AMHC serves nearly 5,500 individuals per year and employs 325 caring, compassionate staff members. About the Role

Description



AMHC is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to lead key accounting functions and support financial operations across the agency. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance, and strong internal controls, while providing guidance to accounting staff and collaborating with leadership.


Position Summary

The Senior Accountant oversees accounts payable operations and supports overall accounting team functions. This position leads the month-end and year-end close processes, ensures financial accuracy, and works closely with the Senior Leadership Team to support agency-wide financial goals.


Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes 
  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations 
  • Reconcile bank accounts and ensure general ledger accuracy 
  • Review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements 

Budgeting, Grants & Analysis

  • Monitor grant expenditures and assist with grant billing and reporting 
  • Support federal funding drawdowns 
  • Assist in developing annual budgets and financial forecasts 
  • Analyze financial data and provide recommendations to leadership 

Audit & Compliance

  • Prepare audit schedules and respond to auditor requests 
  • Maintain and improve internal controls and accounting procedures 
  • Ensure compliance with all financial and regulatory requirements 
  • Serve as Accounting Coordinator for the Supervised Independent Living Program 

Team Support & Leadership

  • Provide guidance and support to accounting staff 
  • Serve as backup for key accounting functions as needed 
  • Collaborate across departments and with senior leadership

Work Environment & Requirements

  • Office-based environment

Schedule

  • Full-time, exempt position 
  • Standard hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM 
  • Occasional extended hours may be required 

Supervision

Reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Requirements

  

· A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration is required, plus at least three year’s of progressive accounting experience. 

· Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

· Experience with grant accounting preferred.
