POSITION TITLE: Specialty Class Instructor
Non-seasonal, part-time, no benefits. Weekdays, evenings, Saturdays, Sundays
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
POSITION REPORTS TO: Aquatic Manager
POSITION PURPOSE:
Responsible for educating and training both staff and community members in various specialty courses including lifeguard training, water safety instruction, first aid, emergency water safety, and CPR. Incorporates American Red Cross programs and procedures into class sessions. Enforces established safety regulations and maintains positive relations with customers.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
This position requires the ability to teach and demonstrate effective first aid safety and life saving techniques. A strong background and knowledge of the specialty area is required to successfully execute this position as well as skill in relating to students and staff members in a professional and caring manner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:
Responsible for effectively instructing safety specialty courses.
a. Prepares, plans, and organizes coursework.
b. Demonstrates skills and observes and corrects errors.
c. Incorporates American Red Cross program standards in class sessions.
d. Follows all instructor policies as cited in the Center handbook.
e. Performs administrative duties including documenting student performance, preparing records, and issuing course certification cards, administering evaluation surveys at the close of each class.
f. Enforces established safety regulations.
Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining positive relations with patrons.
- Assists and supports class participants in a productive manner.
- Maintains a positive rapport with patrons.
- Responds to questions and problems quickly and courteously.
Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective working relations with Center personnel and with management.
- Assists Center staff as needed.
- Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant concerns.
- Attends meetings as required.
- Uses staff feedback effectively to make improvements in instruction.
Assumes responsibility for other duties as assigned.
- Keeps work area clean and well maintained.
- Continues education in specialty area.
PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS:
- Specialty classes are effectively taught in accordance with American Red Cross standards and Center policies and other approved standards.
- Positive relations exist with patrons and class participants.
- Documentation and administrative functions are completed accurately and promptly.
- Current certification and training is maintained in specialty area.
- Center personnel are well trained and capable of effectively using first aid, CPR, life support, and safety techniques.
- Management is appropriately informed of class activities and of significant problems.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Training/Education/Certification:
- Current ICT (Instructor Candidate Training).
- Current instructor certification in specialty area.
- Current standard certification in specialty area.
- Approved Criminal Background Investigation if over 18 years of age.
Required Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of specialty area.
- Understanding of Center operations, policies, and programs.
Experience Required:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
Skills/Abilities:
- Good teaching skills.
- Ability to relate well and communicate with others.
- Strong planning and organization skills.
- Strong swimming ability (for Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructors).
- Tact and problem solving skills.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION
- Stooping: Bending downward and forward at the waist. Requires full use of lower extremities and back muscles.
- Crouching: Bending downward and forward at the leg and spine.
- Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Grasping: Using fingers and palm on an object.
- Talking: Especially where must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
- Seeing: Average, ordinary, vision acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products, or operate machinery.
- Physical Strength: Light Work: Exerts up to 20 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- None. No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions. (Such as in a typical office)
MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION:
General Education- Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, involved instructions and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables.
General Education- Mathematics Ability: Ability to perform very basic math skills including adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing two digit numbers; to perform the four basic arithmetic operations with coins as part of a dollar; to perform operations with units such as inch, foot, and yard; ounce and pound (or their metric counterparts).
General Education- Language Ability: Ability to use a passive vocabulary of 5-6,000 words; to read (by sight or Braille) at a slow rate; define unfamiliar words in dictionaries for meaning, spelling, and pronunciation. Ability to write (to inscribe by whatever means) compound and complex sentences, using cursive style (or Braille equivalent), proper end punctuation, and employ adjectives and adverbs. Ability to communicate in complex sentences; using normal work order with present and past tenses; using a good vocabulary.
