About The Company
Founded in 1984, Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) is the home of Arizona’s first senior emergency shelter program, serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness across the Phoenix metropolitan area. Guided by our values of accessibility, compassion, dignity, equity, and a housing-first approach, we meet people where they are — without judgment — and, through strong community partnerships, help bridge service gaps so every person we serve can take the next step toward stability and hope.
About the Role

Description

Make a Real Impact!  Be the Difference Someone Experiences Today

At Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS), we don’t just provide emergency shelter; we provide safety, stability, and a starting point for people rebuilding their lives.

We’re hiring Shelter Support Staff who are dependable, compassionate, and ready to step into a role that truly matters.

This is not a desk job.

This is a hands-on, people-first role where you will be part of the front line, helping individuals 55+ navigate some of the most critical moments in their lives and overcome homelessness.

If you’re someone who:

  • Wants meaningful work (not just a paycheck)
  • Can stay calm under pressure
  • Can be proactive in difficult times
  • Believes every person deserves dignity and respect ... You’ll thrive here.

Pay transparency: This shift starts at $16.50 per hour. A 3% increase is possible with satisfactory completion of the 90-day review process.

Schedule

Full-time (4 days/week, 11-hour shifts including a weekend shift. Example: Wed-Saturday or Sunday - Wednesday)

24/7 operation (includes evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays).

What You’ll Do (Your Impact Every Day)

You’ll be one of the first people clients interact with—setting the tone for their experience at CASS.

In this role, you will:

  • Welcome and check in clients, helping them access shelter services
  • Guide clients through shelter expectations and available resources
  • Provide real-time support, problem-solving, and referrals
  • Monitor the campus to maintain a safe, respectful environment
  • Document interactions and support services in HMIS software
  • Assist with daily operations (beds, supplies, meals, laundry, donations)
  • Respond to situations as they arise and escalate when needed

Your presence matters! You help create calm, structure, and dignity in an environment that can often feel overwhelming.

What This Job Is (Real Talk)

We want you to succeed here; so, let’s be upfront.  This role is:

  • Fast-paced and active (you will be on your feet most of the shift)
  • People-centered (you’ll interact with individuals from all walks of life)
  • Sometimes challenging (you may navigate conflict, crisis, or emotional situations)
  • Deeply meaningful (you will see the impact of your work every single day)

If you’re looking for something easy or predictable, this may not be the right fit.

If you’re looking for purpose-driven work where you make a difference, this is it.

What Makes You a Great Fit

You don’t need prior shelter experience; we can teach that.

We’re looking for people who:

  • Stay calm, respectful, and solution-focused under pressure
  • Communicate clearly and professionally
  • Are reliable and show up for their team
  • Can balance compassion with boundaries
  • Work well in a structured, team-based environment

Experience in customer service, security, healthcare, behavioral health, or social services is helpful (but not required.)

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is an active, on-your-feet role in a shelter environment.

You should be comfortable with:

  • Walking and standing for extended periods
  • Moving across multiple buildings on campus
  • Lifting up to 25 lbs. occasionally
  • Climbing stairs during routine safety checks, multiple times a day

Why Join CASS

Because your work here actually changes lives.

At CASS, you’ll find:

  • A mission-driven team that supports one another
  • Opportunities to grow within social services and nonprofit work
  • A workplace rooted in commitment, collaboration, compassion, and integrity
  • The chance to be part of something bigger than yourself
  •  Clear career path (Shelter Support? Navigator or Client Advocate? Case Manager? Leadership)

Requirements

1. Minimum age of 18.

2. High school diploma or equivalent.

3. Possess a State of Arizona Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card.

4. Possess a moderate level of proficiency in data entry, Microsoft Word and Excel.

5. CPR-First Aid certification within 90 days of employment.

6. Naloxone (Narcan) training within 90 days of employment.

7. Non-violent crisis de-escalation certification within 90 days of employment.

Preferred

1. Bilingual in English and Spanish or American Sign Language.

2. Experience working with the homeless and / or impoverished.

3. Competent in inter-personal conflict transformation.

CPR-First Aid certification is required for your position, but it is not part of your job duties to use CPR and First Aid in your work at CASS. In an emergency, it is your choice whether you want to provide CPR and First Aid, and it is not an expectation or requirement that you do so.

Naloxone (Narcan) training is required for your position, and administering Naloxone (Narcan) in an emergency is part of your job duties at CASS. Because Naloxone (Narcan) can rapidly reverse opioid overdose, is simple to administer, and has no negative unintended consequences when administered, it is an expectation and requirement of you to administer Naloxone (Narcan) in an emergency.
