Role Overview
The Automation & Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting electrical and control systems that enable safe, reliable, and efficient operation of Enchanted Rock’s power generation and microgrid assets. This role owns control system design and execution from development through commissioning and handoff, ensuring seamless integration with existing infrastructure and operational standards.
This is a hands-on, execution-focused role for engineers with strong experience in electrical and automation systems who enjoy solving complex technical challenges in both office and field environments. The Automation & Controls Engineer works closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, compliant, and scalable control solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and review electrical and control system designs, including schematics, interconnection diagrams, and control packages
- Support full project lifecycle execution, including installation, configuration, commissioning, and performance testing
- Program and configure PLCs, SCADA, DCS, and HMI systems to meet operational and functional requirements
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex electrical and automation system issues, performing root cause analysis as needed
- Ensure successful integration of new systems with existing site infrastructure and technologies
- Participate in FAT, SAT, and user acceptance testing to validate system functionality and performance
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, contractors, and field teams to execute projects effectively
- Maintain technical documentation, including specifications, drawings, test records, and operating manuals
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and internal engineering procedures
- Participate in risk assessments and promote strong safety practices across all activities
- Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, efficiency, and performance
- Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Requirements
Basic (Required) Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Computer Science, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in electrical, automation, controls, or instrumentation engineering within an industrial environment
- Experience supporting projects from design through commissioning and handoff
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, control systems, and applicable industry codes and standards
- Hands-on experience with PLCs, SCADA, DCS, and HMI systems
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office tools
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Effective communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with power generation, distributed energy systems, or microgrids
- Familiarity with SEL relays (SEL-351, SEL-751, SEL-787)
- Experience with Structured Text and Ladder Logic programming
- Knowledge of industrial networking and communication protocols (Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, CAN)
- Experience supporting commissioning activities across multiple project teams
