Job Summary:
The Assistant Supervisor supports daily operations with a primary focus on employee training, maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), production data capture, and the development of structured retraining plans. This role partners closely with the Production Supervisor to ensure employees are properly trained, processes are current and documented, and productivity and quality expectations are consistently met. The assistant supervisor helps manage a union workforce, supporting productivity, safety, and positive labor relations in alignment with company policies and the collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with onboarding and training new employees, ensuring understanding of job tasks, safety requirements, and quality standards.
- Conduct refresher and retraining sessions for existing employees based on performance gaps, process changes, or quality issues.
- Support the development, review, and updating of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to reflect current operations and best practices.
- Ensure updated SOPs are communicated, trained, and followed on the production floor.
- Capture and track production data related to output, efficiency, quality, and labor performance.
- Assist in analyzing production and performance data to identify training needs and improvement opportunities.
- Support the creation of retraining plans, including defined timeframes, milestones, and follow-up evaluations.
- Track employee retraining progress and report status and outcomes to the Supervisor and management.
- Provide floor support to reinforce proper procedures, safe work practices, and productivity expectations.
- Serve as a point of contact for employees regarding training questions, SOP clarification, and process guidance.
- Promote continuous improvement by identifying process gaps and recommending training or procedural updates.
- Assist the Production Supervisor with daily operational tasks and special projects as assigned. Complete daily reports for production, labeling output, and efficiency metrics.
- Track labor hours, staffing, and attendance records.
- Assist in investigations of safety, quality, or workplace incidents.
· Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience:
· High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
· 3+ years of leadership experience in food manufacturing, preferably with both production and labeling/packaging.
· Proven success achieving throughput, yield, and efficiency goals.
· Experience managing in a union environment required.
· Strong knowledge of HACCP, GMPs, and food safety regulations.
· Familiarity with Redzone production management software preferred.
· Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
· Ability to motivate teams and maintain positive labor relations.
· Flexibility to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
· Fluent in Spanish is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
· Majority of work performed in a manufacturing plant with exposure to noise, varying temperatures, and chemicals.
· Prolonged periods of standing, walking, and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
· Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toe shoes.
· Must maintain mental alertness, focus, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
