About the Role

Description

The Library Associate 2 is the entry-level position in the Library Associate job family at the Simi Valley Library. Under the direction of library management, this position performs a variety of moderately complex technical and paraprofessional duties in support of different library functions, primarily at the circulation desk. This role also provides direct customer service to library patrons and helps support daily library operations.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.

  • Provides customer service by welcoming patrons, registering new library users, issuing library cards, checking out materials, and managing patron accounts. 
  • Assists patrons with locating materials, directing them to the appropriate service desk, using public computers, and explaining library procedures such as checking out materials, logging onto the internet, and making copies. 
  • Checks in and processes library materials as needed. 
  • Accepts and processes fines, fees, and other payments. 
  • Provides information about library programs, events, meeting or conference room use, and general library services. 
  • Mails library materials as needed for homebound patron services. 
  • Shelves library materials and helps maintain an organized and welcoming library environment. 
  • Addresses patron conduct or safety concerns and escalates issues to appropriate library management when needed. 
  • Follows all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and the custodianship of patron records. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education,

training and/or work experience required.

  • H.S. Diploma or GED required
  • Two years library experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of library systems and databases preferred
  • Ability to work a regular schedule that may include a combination of days, evenings and weekends
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • English/Spanish speaking is a plus

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to frequently move from place to place within the location; file and retrieve books and other items on high shelves. 
  • Lift/push up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. of heavy boxes, books, and equipment; work in confined spaces; walk; bend; stoop; reach; and climb.
