Position Summary: 

Barber-Nichols is seeking a highly motivated, skilled, and energetic candidate for the Barber-Nichols Apprenticeship Program. This program is a clear career path to a Certified Machinist Journeyman through the State of Colorado’s Department of Labor. The apprentice will experience 6000 on the job learning hours and 675 hours of related instruction through approved providers (e.g., Warren Tech and/or Metropolitan State University of Denver, aligned to the registered apprenticeship program. There is a probationary period of 1000 hours or one year, whichever is shorter. The apprentice will complete three rotations throughout the 6000 hours providing experience with Tooling, CNC Lathe, CNC Mill, and CNC Grinding. These rotations will allow for the apprentice to earn 47 competencies-based skills on a rotational grading expectation in which the apprentice improves in their competencies throughout each rotation. This role provides a structured pathway into advanced manufacturing through hands-on training, formal instruction, and progressive wage growth.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in rotational on the job training which will highlight setup and operational procedures and protocol for manual machine tools as required in support of CNC operations.
  • Participate in rotational on the job training which will highlight setup and operational procedures and protocols of 2 axis CNC horizontal & VTL lathes and/or setup and operational procedures and protocols of 3, 4, and 5 axis CNC mills.
  • Participate in rotational on the job training on how to evaluate and submit requisitions purchased tooling and supplies.
  • Organizes, stages, and moves materials as required.

Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years of age 
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Physically capable of performing the essential functions of the occupation with or without reasonable accommodation that will not pose a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual or others.
  • Has completed at least 1-2 years of relevant machinist or manufacturing-related coursework through an approved training provider at either Warren Tech or MSU Denver.
  • Submit to Drug Testing and background check conducted post selection but pre-employment.

  • Physical demands: While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is primarily required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, and bend. Required to speak and communicate clearly with others. Will need to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 5 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Corrected vision to 20/20 or adequate and ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Mental demands: While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is required to read, write, analyze data and reports, exercise judgment, develop plans, procedures and goals, present information to others and work under pressure.
  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is exposed to high level of manufacturing and equipment noise. Duties are performed indoors in a manufacturing environment with temperature changes. Exposure to hazardous materials, fumes or airborne particles and moving mechanical parts with vibration.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance 

Must be able to work in the U.S without sponsorship. No security clearance required.

To conform to U.S. Government commercial space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3), applicants for employment at Barber-Nichols must be a U.S. citizen or national, lawfully admitted for permanent residence into the U.S. (i.e., current green card holder), or lawfully admitted as a refugee or granted asylum under 8 U.S.C. § 1157-1158. Salary Pay Scale (Apprenticeship Wage Progression):
This role begins at $24.00/hour, with structured wage progression tied to competency completion throughout the apprenticeship program.
