YARD LOGISTICS SPECIALIST (GOAT DRIVER)

Position Summary
The Yard Logistics Specialist (Goat Driver) is responsible for safely positioning and maneuvering equipment around the yard. The YLS plays a crucial role in the efficient operation of transportation and logistics within our facilities and yards. This position involves safely maneuvering yard goat vehicles, also known as yard trucks or terminal tractors, to transport trailers and containers within the facility premises.
Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully you must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.
- Maintain and contribute to a safe work environment by adhering to policies and procedures as outlined in the Company Safety Program.
- Correctly position equipment in the yard using a yard goat tractor.
- Clearly communicate all container moves and container numbers with dispatch personnel.
- Perform any other task or assignment as deemed necessary by the organization.
- Safely operate and maneuver yard goat vehicles to move trailers, containers, or other equipment within the facility yard or designated areas. Adhere to all safety protocols and traffic regulations to prevent accidents or damage to property.
- Hook up and unhook trailers or containers from the yard goat vehicle using appropriate equipment such as fifth-wheel couplings or pintle hooks. Position trailers accurately at loading docks, storage areas, or designated spots for further handling.
- Efficiently organize and manage the movement of trailers or containers within the yard to optimize space utilization and facilitate smooth workflow. Coordinate with warehouse personnel, supervisors, or yard controllers to prioritize tasks and ensure timely delivery or pickup of trailers.
- Conduct routine inspections of yard goat vehicles to ensure proper functioning of mechanical, electrical, and safety systems. Report any defects, malfunctions, or damage to maintenance personnel for prompt repair or maintenance.
- Maintain accurate records of trailer movements, mileage, fuel consumption, or any incidents occurring during operations. Prepare and submit reports as required by management to track productivity, efficiency, and compliance with operational procedures.
- Effectively communicate with supervisors, coworkers, or other personnel using two-way radios, hand signals, or verbal instructions to coordinate tasks, receive assignments, or provide updates on operational activities.
- Adhere to all safety regulations, company policies, and procedures governing the operation of yard goat vehicles and movement of trailers within the facility. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required and actively participate in safety training programs.

- Minimum one-year Class-A driving experience required.
- Clean driving record required.
- Class A Commercial Driver's License required.
- Candidates must successfully complete all pre-employment screenings, which include physical, lift test, drug test, background check, and previous employment verification.
- Candidates must be willing to work a minimum of 8 and up to 12 hours per shift.
- The ability to read and understand English and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manual.
- Ability to perform a variety of tasks in a transportation yard environment.
- Ability to work at a consistent rate.
- Ability to work and make yard moves with the big picture in mind (yard awareness).
- Prior experience operating yard goat vehicles or similar equipment preferred.
- Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting techniques.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Excellent attention to detail, spatial awareness, and hand-eye coordination.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to follow instructions accurately.
- Physical stamina and the ability to withstand prolonged periods of sitting, bending, and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Work Environment
- The employee is regularly exposed to incoming and outgoing traffic.
Compensation
The Yard Logistics Specialist position offers a competitive hourly range of $18 to $22 per hour.
