POSITION TITLE: Part-time Field Staff

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Manager of Field Services

EMPLOYEE GROUP: TEMPO 

LOCATION: Statewide

HOURS/STATUS: Part-time/Non-exempt – Position starts September 1

AVAILABLE POSITIONS: Five (5)

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Education Minnesota Part-time Field Staff Program is designed to provide training and experience opportunities to members who desire to move into staff work as a career. Part-time staff shall continue in their current employment while in this program. The work assignment consists of about 300 hours of Education Minnesota employment per year. The part-time field staff positions will be assigned to a field office near their current residence. If selected, members must resign all elected or appointed positions at the local, state, and national levels.
 
Education Minnesota is a member-led labor union that has identified racial equity and social justice as primary organizational goals. All staff are expected to participate, individually and collectively, in ongoing training, discussions, and activities to advance these goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with a variety of locals, local leaders and state organization projects and programs. 
  • Develop backgrounds, skills, and experience in the following areas:
    • Organizing.
    • Membership Promotion.
    • Collective Bargaining.
    • Member Rights.
    • Racial Equity and Social Justice.
    • Communications. 
    • Legislative and Political Action.
    • Education Issues. 
  • Participate in internal and external anti-racist, LGBTQ+ trainings.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to creating an inclusive space for members and staff, extending this culture of equity and inclusion into the work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • High degree of motivation, integrity, and leadership.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of organizing, collective bargaining, member rights, member promotion, education issues, legislative and political action.
  • Ability to write and speak effectively.
  • Ability to analyze and use research data.
  • Ability to work long hours and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to apply anti-racist principles in a variety of ways. 
  • Work cooperatively with Education Minnesota leaders and staff.
  • Commitment to and knowledge of Education Minnesota goals and issues.
  • Availability for assignments after normal work hours, evenings, and weekends.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Current, active member of Education Minnesota.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some travel with overnights stays
  • Frequent evening and weekend work required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position will interact with employees, vendors, members, and the general public on a somewhat regular basis. These interactions require judgment and discretion that can involve confidential information, private information and some disagreeable human interactions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Employee is required to: CONTINUOUSLY sit, talk, and hear; FREQUENTLY stand, walk, and repetitively use hands dexterously (use fingers to handle, feel), reach with hands and arms, bend and physically lift and carry up to 10 pounds; occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and travel by auto.

CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION: 

Maintain confidential information related to the organization, members and potential members, and staff.

STARTING SALARY RANGE: 

The current bargained rate of pay is $35.59/hour.

 BENEFITS:

This is a part-time position (no more than 300 hours per year) therefore limited to the benefits that are offered by Education Minnesota. The benefits package for this position would include:

  • Business mileage reimbursement.
  • Reimbursement for food or lodging when necessary.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
