Schedule: Monday - Friday 6:00 AM –5:00 PM

Target Start Date: Tuesday, May 26th, 2026


This position is seasonal and contingent. This opportunity will last approximately 9-11 weeks. Based on volume and business need, length of assignment may be adjusted. 


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Utility Assistant is responsible for assisting the Kitchen Production Supervisor in the daily meal preparation, organization, staging, routing, and counting prior to transport. This position is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work environment, in compliance with all state, local, and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) policies, practices, and procedures. This role is required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Reliable, consistent, attendance is a requirement. This position requires punctuality and dependable attendance to meet the needs of the business, including attending and taking part in meetings and presentations.
  2. Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work environment, in compliance with all state, local, and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) policies, practices, and procedures. 
  3. Ensures all supplies are available for the week’s menu and the daily food production and transportation.
  4. Assists in receiving all inventory.
  5. Maintains the cleanliness and organization of inventory in the warehouse.
  6. Organizes all meal services by route, serving time, and delivery wave. 
  7. Supports all project areas on the dock to maintain an easy workflow. 
  8. Stages all equipment based on assigned projects daily.
  9. Cross-checks with the Kitchen Coordinator that all meal components and the number of meals are accurate and routed to the proper destination, and organizes the workload to reflect expedited loading times. 
  10. Checks daily number counts for all sites, and changes daily number/milk sheet counts, if needed.
  11. Prepares meal orders for transportation, which includes maintaining accuracy in counting meal components and milk for distribution. 
  12. Assists in completing all tasks for the front and back dock, the cart wash, and the milk room. 
  13. Organizes meals and paperwork for delivery drivers. 
  14. Keeps an accurate inventory of all equipment.
  15. Follows portion control protocols while working on food packing lines.
  16. Ensures all work areas are cleaned and sanitized after the completion of each project.
  17. Maintains the daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedule.
  18. Maintains the cleanliness of all equipment in the cart washroom.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education/Experience:

  • High School Diploma from an accredited school or general education development (GED) certificate
  • Forklift experience
  • 1 year of warehousing and dock experience preferred 
  • Shipping and receiving experience preferred
  • 1+ years of customer service experience preferred


Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

  • Must complete HFB forklift training and certification within 15 days of hire date

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The employee will need to have the average ability to hear horns, warnings, and alerts associated with a warehouse.  


WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While the job is generally performed in a warehouse and kitchen, the employee is frequently exposed to freezers, enclosed and/or tight spaces, wet and/or humid conditions, areas in which moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals are present, strong food-related smells, and outside weather conditions. The employee will be exposed to loud/elevated noises throughout the workday.


TRAVEL REQUIRED: 

No travel is required for this role.


This role supports hours of operations at the Houston Food Bank facilities, as necessary, and may require flexibility (e.g., times of disaster, community events, company events).
