The Sewing Labs is a welcoming and inclusive community teaching the legacy of sewing for employment, entrepreneurship, and enrichment. Many of our students find themselves in at-risk situations, such as dealing with generational poverty, substance abuse and recovery, returning citizens, immigrants, and veterans. Our hands-on training provides personal attention and active listening, which is a more successful path to economic success for individuals who find themselves in at-risk situations.
About the Role

Description

 The Sewing Labs is seeking guest and volunteer instructors to support our growing lineup of community-based sewing and textile arts classes. This is an ongoing, as-needed (PRN) opportunity for individuals who are passionate about sharing their skills in a creative, inclusive environment.


We welcome instructors interested in leading one-time workshops, short-term series, or occasional classes based on their availability and expertise.


Areas of Interest Include:

  • Beginner to advanced sewing techniques 
  • Garment construction and alterations 
  • Quilting and fiber arts 
  • Upcycling, mending, and sustainable fashion practices 
  • Machine basics and maintenance 
  • Specialty or creative textile workshops 

Role Overview:


 Instructors are responsible for planning and leading engaging, hands-on classes for adult learners of varying skill levels. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy teaching, mentoring, and building confidence in others through sewing.


Engagement Type:

  • PRN / as-needed scheduling 
  • Mix of paid and volunteer opportunities, depending on class type and funding 
  • Flexible commitment based on instructor availability and program needs

Requirements

 What We Look For:

  • Strong sewing or textile arts experience 
  • Ability to teach in a clear, encouraging, and inclusive manner 
  • Reliability and good communication 
  • Prior teaching experience is helpful but not required
