POSITION TITLE: Facilities Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Facilities GRADE: 101 FLSA: Non-Exempt

FTE: 1.0 (40 hours per week)

POSITION DESCRIPTION: This position provides essential janitorial, hosting, and basic maintenance services to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for staff and visitors. The role requires routine cleaning, event support, basic repairs, and upkeep of building systems and spaces. Work is performed independently and under the direction of the Facilities Manager.

Wage range: $15.76-19.30 per hour, depending on experience


Benefits:

This full--time position includes a full benefits package including health, dental, vision, life, AD&D, and supplemental insurance coverages as well as HRA and retirement savings. Benefits include vacation and sick leave, and 13 paid holidays.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


Works 40 hours per week.

Ability to arrive at locations throughout Mesa County to successfully fulfill job expectations. Locations include, but are not limited to, library branches and external locations for outreach, programs, and classes.

  

Daily Responsibilities:

  

· Regularly check restrooms and respond to service calls concerning messes/problems

· Refill restroom towels, soap, toilet tissue, and sanitary product dispensers when necessary

· Spot vacuum carpeted floors, stairs, and elevator throughout the day

· Respond to service calls concerning spills, messes, stains, bodily emissions, refuse, furniture breakage, odors, etc. throughout the day and across the campus as necessary

· Clean and wipe tables and furniture throughout the day as needed

· Dusting shelves, displays, window sills, pamphlet stands, artwork, etc. a needed

· Sweep and/or mop non-carpeted floors when necessary

· Clean indoor glass, windows, and entryways when spotted or smudged

· Empty and clean trash receptacles and recycling bins throughout the facility when necessary

· Pick up trash, sweep, and wipe furniture on patios

· Empty outdoor trash cans and pick up litter and cigarette butts around the campus

· Clean staff break room, stock supplies, wash and put away dishes, clean microwave, wipe tables and chairs, clean out refrigerators monthly or when needed

· Assist with, or independently complete simple “work orders” and service requests

· Attend to emergencies when necessary


Weekly Responsibilities:

  

· Water indoor plants in public and common areas and repot when needed

· Perform high dusting and remove cobwebs, both indoors and outdoors, as needed

· Deep clean in the lower traffic areas on a perpetual, rotating basis or as needed.


On an as needed basis:

  

· Assist with, or independently complete the setup and tear-down of meetings, classes, conferences, and special events

· Assist with scheduling and organization of meetings, classes, conferences, and special events when requested

· Clean conference/community rooms before and after usage and events

· Clean the accessible, exterior windows when spotted, smudged, or dirty

· Clean blinds

· Change air fresheners and maintain dispensers

· Clean and organize janitor’s closets, supply rooms, storage areas, office, and shop

· Perform laundry duties to include, janitorial rags, floor mops, table cloths, etc.

· Restock cleaning supplies for janitorial crew, library departments, branches, conference rooms, 

and volunteers

· Wash walls and equipment; use ladders when required in work assignments

· Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools

· Attend staff meetings and staff training monthly

· Assist with light maintenance duties such as changing light bulbs, monitoring systems settings, 

painting, battery changing, door closer adjustments, and simple repair work

· Assist with or undertake shelving, cart, and furniture assembly projects when needed

· Assist Security staff with observation and awareness of potential problems in and around the 

library, the campus, and the restrooms.

· Assist with pulling weeds or shoveling snow when needed

· Assist finance department in assessing and completing annual item and equipment inventory

· Perform related, other duties as required


Routinely

  

· Maintain and update lists associated with the ordering of janitorial and cleaning supplies.

· Maintain and update lists associated with the ordering of break room, conference room, and pantry supplies.

· Collect, move, sort, store, re-box, palletize, and prepare “withdrawn” books for shipment

· Safely operate all vehicles and other job-related equipment

· Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools

· Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies


SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  

  • Communicates clearly in-person and via email and other electronic tools consistently and in a timely manner. Works with others to complete assignments. 
  • Performs additional duties as opportunities arise that assist the department and the library in achieving specified goals and objectives. 
  • Stays informed on developments of Mesa County Libraries services and trends: Attends monthly staff meetings and training; attends external training as requested, stays aware of changes via email and staff wiki: 
  • May participate in and contribute to library committees and activities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of basic custodial procedures and routines

Knowledge of basic preventative maintenance

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license, required

Must meet library automobile insurance requirements to drive library vehicles


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to maneuver about the library in a timely fashion

Ability to bend to floor level or reach a height of 75 inches

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds from the floor to a height of 4 feet

Ability to read a minimum print size equal to 10 point

Ability to tolerate dust, mold, etc. that may have accumulated on books


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. 

Must work with cleaning chemicals and must be able to properly dilute, use and ensure their own safety as well as others who may come in contact with the chemicals.

Exposure to varying conditions including extreme heat, extreme cold, rain or snow.

Regular work near moving mechanical parts

Subject to many interruptions

Occasional travel between library locations


MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

High School graduation or equivalent

One year of previous janitorial, housekeeping, or hospitality experience preferred

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license, required.


SCHEDULE:

Base schedule is Monday through Friday 9:30 am to 6:00 pm.  May occasionally include a trade out for a weekend day or a few later evening hours to assist with programs and events.  A reasonable degree of flexibility will be both extended and expected. Unpaid meal break of at least ½ hour per day to be taken for each 5 hours scheduled.
