About the Role

General Statement of Duties

A lifeguard is an employee of the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department and thus represents the City of Henderson.  An employee in this position will perform skilled duties to ensure the well-being and safety of the public in the swimming pool area. A lifeguard works under the guidance and direct supervision of the Aquatic Program Supervisor.  Work is reviewed through direct observation and quality and quantity of work produced.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Maintain continuous surveillance of persons in and around the swimming areas of pools, lakes, ponds and/or oceans
  • Knowledgeable of safety guidelines and regulations associated with OSHA, American Red Cross, and other applicable local, state or national guidelines associated with aquatics
  • Ability to enforce safety guidelines associated with the aquatic center and communicate to the general public/patrons
  • Ability to teach swimming techniques and safety education to new swimmers
  • Ability to ensure that the aquatic center is clean and neat 
  • Ability to ensure maintenance and storage of rescue equipment
  • Ability to provide supplies and program needs to patrons
  • Ability to provide creative activities to meet the needs of the patrons
  • Ability to perform chemical testing of the pool and maintain accurate records
  • Possess leadership and supervision skills
  • Possess effective communication and public relations skills
  • Employee will assist with the responsibility for health, well-being and happiness of swimmers.  
  • Maintains continuous surveillance of people in a body of water such as swimming pools, lakes, ponds and oceans where Henderson Vance Recreation and Parks Department programs are located.  
  • Encourage respect for personal property, aquatics equipment and facility.  
  • Set a good example for swimmers in all areas, including cleanliness, punctuality, cleaning chores, rules, safety and sportsmanship.
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with Aquatic Center and all program areas.  This includes but is not limited to being responsible for all swimmers’ safety and knowing their whereabouts at all times.  Conducting headcounts throughout the day.
  • Communicate regularly with Aquatics Program Supervisor and the Head Lifeguard regarding concerns, updates and challenges.
  • Possess knowledge of the Aquatics Center and be able to communicate this information to the public.
  • Ensures that all supplies and program needs are available to the swimmers at all times.
  • Ensures the Aquatic Center site is clean and neat when activities are over and supplies/equipment is placed back in appropriate places.
  • Assist Aquatics Program Supervisor and the head Lifeguard as needed, including but not limit to setting up equipment, supervising and leading activities and brain storming activities.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Requirements

Physical Requirements 

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.  Must be able to perform work exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently and 20 pounds of force constantly.  Must possess visual acuity to oversee large groups of people at once.


Special Requirements
  • Must have lifeguard certification prior to employment.
  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
