Job Summary

The RN – Endoscopy provides nursing care to patients undergoing gastrointestinal and related endoscopic procedures. This includes pre-procedure preparation, intra-procedure assistance, monitoring of sedation and patient response, and post-procedure recovery. The RN collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, high-quality, and patient-centered care throughout the procedural experience.

Essential Functions

  • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care before, during, and after endoscopy procedures.
  • Administers and monitors conscious sedation and manages patient responses during procedures.
  • Assists physicians with endoscopic procedures including biopsies, polyp removal, and hemostasis.
  • Monitors patient condition, vital signs, and cardiac rhythms, reporting changes promptly.
  • Provides pre- and post-procedure patient education and discharge instructions.
  • Documents all nursing assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment, adheres to infection control and safety protocols.
  • Handles specimens appropriately and ensures proper labeling and documentation.
  • Participates in performance improvement initiatives and staff education.
  • Responds effectively to emergencies and follows facility emergency protocols.  

Knowledge/Abilities/Skills/Expectations

  • Strong critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills.
  • Proficient in IV therapy, sedation monitoring, and airway management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
  • Familiarity with endoscopic equipment, sterile technique, and procedural workflow.
  • Competency in electronic documentation and EMR systems.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and team collaboration.
  • Physical ability to assist with patient positioning and respond to clinical demands. 


Education

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), required. 
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), preferred.  

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), required within time frame specified in facility policy.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), required within time frame specified in facility policy.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), preferred.  

Experience

  • Minimum 6 months of clinical nursing experience in a direct patient care setting preferred.
  • Previous endoscopy, perioperative, or critical care experience preferred.
