Position Type: Part-Time, On-Site
Compensation: $20-$25/hour
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30-1pm or 12:30-6pm
Note: This role follows the school-year calendar and does not include hours during academic breaks. Summer Camp work may be available based on program needs and availability.
Position Overview:
As a Youth Development Professional (YDP) with the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro, you will create a safe, engaging, and supportive environment where teens can grow, learn, and thrive. You’ll mentor and inspire youth through after-school programs that promote leadership, personal development, and academic success. Essential Functions:
Safe & Supportive Environment: Ensure a safe, nurturing space for teens that aligns with organizational standards and promotes positive engagement.
Teen Program Development & Facilitation: Assist in creating and leading, teen-appropriate activities that foster personal growth, educational achievement, and character development in collaboration with Program Managers and Coordinators.
Flexible Site Support: Travel to other sites as needed to meet ratio requirements and provide temporary program support.
Behavioral Guidance & Role Modeling: Uphold Clubhouse rules, model positive behavior, and ensure appropriate supervision to maintain a structured and respectful environment.
Safety Standards & Compliance: Maintain organizational safety standards, ensuring all teens are always appropriately supervised and secure.
Team Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with colleagues to achieve program goals, share best practices, and enhance program effectiveness.
Operational Support: Assist with additional site needs and responsibilities as required to ensure program and operational success.
Adaptability & Additional Duties: Take on additional duties as assigned to meet the evolving needs of the program and support overall operations.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience:
Required:
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in youth development, including planning and supervising activities for teens.
- AA degree or BA degree (minimum of 60 units). Preference in education or youth related fields.
- CPR/First Aid certification required.
- Ability to work the entire school year, adhering to the scheduled hours.
- Genuine belief in the mission of BGCSL and the responsibility that comes with serving youth and the community.
Educational Requirements (Must have one of the following):
- High school diploma + 48 college semester units (˜ 2 years college), OR
- High school diploma + an Associate’s (or higher) degree, OR
- High school diploma + a passing score on the district’s Paraeducator/Paraprofessional Exam.
Preferred:
- Multi-conversational language skills a HUGE plus (Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Tagalog).
- Comfortable with Microsoft Office applications and comfortable with utilizing technology in program delivery.
- Ability to handle stress, analyze problems, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods, and perform routine math calculations.
- High emotional intelligence (EQ) can “read the room” and gain the trust and confidence of a diverse group of teens. Ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Extremely patient and able to work under pressure or emotionally volatile situations.
Work Environment:
This position will work primarily in a Clubhouse environment at the Boys & Girls Club of San Leandro. This role may occasionally require flexibility to accommodate organizational events or deadlines. Key aspects of the work environment include:
- Frequently required to stand
- Frequently required to walk
- Occasionally required to sit
- Frequently required to utilize hand and finger dexterity
- Frequently required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crawl
- Continually required to talk or hear
- Rarely work in high, precarious places (playground equipment height)
- Occasionally exposure to outside weather conditions
- Occasionally exposure to bloodborne and airborne pathogens or infectious materials (Communicable diseases in an office environment including COVID-19, common cold, and flu viruses. Negative TB screen required).
- While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50-70 pounds (with support, a child that has fallen)
- Specialized equipment: Walkie Talkie radios for communication
