About the Foundry Design Engineer Position

We are seeking a hands-on Metal Foundry Design Engineer to support the design, development, and continuous improvement of cast metal components, tooling, patterns, gating, risering, and manufacturing processes.

This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving real production challenges, collaborating with shop-floor teams, and turning customer requirements into reliable, manufacturable casting solutions. You will work closely with engineering, quality, production, the pattern shop, and customer-facing teams to design castings that meet dimensional, metallurgical, quality, and cost requirements. You will evaluate customer drawings and 3D models, develop foundry-friendly designs, support casting simulations, troubleshoot casting defects, and help improve processes from quotation through production launch.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review customer drawings, specifications, and 3D models to determine casting requirements and manufacturability.
  • Design and improve casting layouts, patterns, core boxes, gating, risering, chills, and related tooling.
  • Use CAD software to create or modify solid models, manufacturing drawings, and tooling concepts.
  • Support solidification and mold-filling simulations to improve casting quality and reduce scrap.
  • Partner with production, quality, and pattern shop teams to troubleshoot defects, dimensional issues, and process concerns.
  • Recommend design changes that improve castability, reduce rework, and support customer performance requirements.
  • Assist with new product launches, sample castings, process documentation, and production standards.
  • Support cost estimating and quoting by providing engineering input on tooling, cores, risers, weights, yields, heat treatment, and finishing requirements.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records, process notes, and product master data.
  • Promote a safe, quality-focused, and continuous improvement culture throughout the foundry.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Experience in a metal foundry, casting operation, pattern shop, tooling environment, or heavy manufacturing setting strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of sand casting, mold design, cores, gating, risering, shrinkage, solidification, heat treatment, and casting defects.
  • Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, or similar.
  • Experience with casting simulation software such as MAGMASOFT or similar is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, GD&T, and customer requirements.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and project management skills.
  • Comfortable working in both office and foundry production environments.
  • Self-motivated, practical, and willing to collaborate directly with operators, supervisors, engineers, and customers.

What's In It For You

  • Competitive market-leading compensation.
  • Quarterly bonus opportunities based on company performance.
  • Comprehensive benefits with low employee costs.
  • Excellent retirement and savings programs with strong company contributions.
  • Work-life balance with 3 weeks of vacation, 11 paid holidays, and 48 hours of paid sick time annually.
  • Opportunities for personal, professional, and financial growth through local and global career paths.
  • Long-term job stability backed by more than 100 years of success in the growing global mining industry.
