Our competitive salary for this position is in the range of $61,116.97 up to $80,727.45 based on years of relevant experience. Responsibilities
Under the leadership of the Director,I&R Law Services key Consultant responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Subject to The Legal Aid Act and The Legal Aid Regulations, provides immigration and refugee legal services (advice, representation), under the supervison of a lawyer, to eligible clients, where the matter is considered to have legal merit.
- Legal Services include (as defined in The Legal Aid Regulations):
- Interviewing applicants/clients to determine service eligibility (merit), to assess the legal problem, to gather information, to determine with the client the range of options available, to make recommendations as to the most viable options in consultation with the supervising lawyer
- Representing a client at the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), under the supervision of a lawyer.
- Preparing immigration and refugee law documents, including IRB, IRCC portal applications (Refugee Protection Division (RPD) Claim, Pre-Removal Risk Assessment (PRRA)), and interviewing clients to assist in said preparation.
- Representing clients at RPD Hearings, PRRAs, Humanitarian and Compassionate Applications (H&Cs), deferrals and other applications to CBSA and/or the IRCC.
- Providing summary legal advice.
- Participating in legal education and test case initiatives.
- Participating in data collecting, docketing, and producing reports, as required.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- Licensed as a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant - IRB is a requirement.
- Minimum of two (2) years of previous I&R law experience preparing I&R documents, interviewing immigrants and refugees, attending hearings is a requirement.
- Meets LAS’ I&R Quality and Service Standards is a requirement.
- Experience working with marginalized populations within the justice system is a requirement.
- Knowledge of word processing and videoconferencing technologies, including MS Teams, Word, and Adobe PDF is a requirement.
- Proficiency in Office 365 program is a requirement.
- Experience using CLIO practice management software is an asset.
- Lived experience as an immigrant and/or within immigrant and refugee communities is an asset.
- Ability to communicate in languages other than English is an asset.
