Position: Assistant Professor of Music & Assistant Band Director

Purpose:

The Assistant Professor of Music/Assistant Band Director serves as a faculty member and administrative leader within the Division of Student Affairs and Division of Academic Affairs, supporting the artistic, educational, and operational excellence of Lincoln University's band program. Reporting to the Director of Bands, this position provides leadership in the instruction, administration, recruitment, performance, and continued development of the University's band ensembles while contributing to the University's mission of student success, leadership development, and community engagement. 

The Assistant Professor/Assistant Band Director assists with all aspects of the Marching Musical Storm, concert bands, pep bands, jazz ensembles, athletic bands, and other musical groups as assigned. The position collaborates with students, faculty, staff, alumni, community partners, and prospective students to cultivate an environment rooted in excellence, accountability, discipline, and pride. 

As a faculty member, the Assistant Professor teaches undergraduate music courses consistent with departmental needs while advising students, supporting assessment efforts, participating in institutional service, and contributing to curriculum development. Within Student Affairs, the position plays an important role in fostering student engagement, belonging, retention, leadership development, and school spirit through musical performance and campus traditions. 

Through collaborative leadership, innovative recruitment strategies, and student-centered mentorship, the Assistant Professor/Assistant Band Director advances the University's commitment to developing musicians, scholars, and leaders who positively represent Lincoln University throughout Missouri and beyond. 

Essential Job Functions, Duties, & Responsibilities:

• Assist the Director of Bands with the artistic, administrative, and operational leadership of all university band ensembles.   
• Conduct rehearsals and performances for the Marching Musical Storm and other instrumental ensembles as assigned.   
• Serve as primary conductor for designated ensembles in the absence of the Director of Bands.   
• Teach undergraduate music courses consistent with academic qualifications and departmental needs.  
• Assist with planning, coordinating, and executing all marching band performances, athletic events, concerts, ceremonies, community performances, and university special events.   
• Coordinate music selection, drill design implementation, rehearsal planning, and performance preparation.  
• Recruit prospective students through high school visits, honor bands, recruitment events, campus visits, and community outreach initiatives.   
• Mentor students academically, musically, and professionally while promoting student success, persistence, and graduation.   
• Assist with band camp planning, orientation, leadership development, and student training programs.  
• Support student leadership development within the band program by advising drum majors, section leaders, and student officers. 
• Coordinate equipment inventory, instrument maintenance, uniforms, facilities, and transportation logistics.
• Assist with purchasing, budgeting, vendor coordination, and fiscal management in accordance with university policies.  
• Maintain accurate records regarding student participation, scholarship eligibility, inventories, travel documentation, and program assessment.  
• Collaborate with Athletics, Student Engagement, Admissions, Alumni Affairs, Advancement, University Marketing, and Academic Affairs to support institutional initiatives.  
• Represent the University and Division of Student Affairs at recruitment events, alumni functions, conferences, and community engagements.   
• Support assessment efforts by collecting and analyzing data related to recruitment, retention, student learning outcomes, and program effectiveness.   
• Maintain compliance with University, NCAA, conference, state, and federal policies affecting student organizations and performances.  
• Participate in evening, weekend, holiday, and travel responsibilities associated with performances, competitions, recruitment, and special events.  
• Perform additional duties as assigned in support of the Division of Student Affairs.

• Assist in developing the long-term strategic vision for the University band program.  
• Coordinate guest clinicians, workshops, leadership conferences, and professional development opportunities.   
• Assist in developing and implementing annual recruitment and retention plans for the band program.  
• Serve on University committees, search committees, and institutional task forces.   
• Assist with grant writing, fundraising initiatives, sponsorship development, and alumni engagement activities.  
• Develop partnerships with high school band directors, community colleges, and music educators throughout Missouri and neighboring states.   
• Support summer music camps, leadership academies, and community engagement initiatives.   
• Assist with assessment reports, accreditation documentation, annual reports, and strategic planning efforts.  
• Promote an inclusive environment that reflects the University's commitment to student belonging and success. 
• Qualifications:
• Master's degree in music, Music Education, Instrumental Conducting, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.   
• Demonstrated experience as an Assistant Band Director, Band Director, Graduate Assistant, or equivalent collegiate or secondary-level leadership experience.   
• Demonstrated experience conducting concert and/or marching ensembles.   
• Ability to teach undergraduate music courses.  
• Valid driver's license with ability to travel.  
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours during band season.

• Demonstrated expertise in instrumental music instruction and ensemble conducting.  
• Knowledge of HBCU band traditions and collegiate marching band operations.  
• Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills.   
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication abilities. 
• Demonstrated commitment to student development and holistic education.   
• Ability to build collaborative relationships across academic and student affairs divisions.   
• Strong recruitment, mentoring, and advising skills.  
• Ability to organize multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.   
• Knowledge of music technology, notation software, Microsoft Office Suite, and student information systems.   
• Ability to manage budgets, inventories, purchasing processes, and university resources responsibly.  
• Commitment to professionalism, ethical conduct, accountability, and continuous improvement.   
• Ability to foster an inclusive and student-centered learning environment.
• Thorough proficiency with Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office suite, and the ability to learn and integrate additional platforms or technologies as needed. 
• Knowledge of federal and state regulations impacting student mental health and higher education, including HIPAA, Title IX, Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Clery Act, the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA), and Office for Civil Rights (OCR) guidance and compliance requirements.
• Ability to adapt to a flexible schedule, including participation in evening and weekend activities, as required to meet student needs and ensure continuity of services. 

Physical Demands:

• Ability to stand for extended periods during rehearsals and performances.  
• Ability to conduct ensembles and demonstrate instrumental techniques.   
• Ability to lift and transport musical instruments and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.  
• Ability to travel for performances, recruitment activities, and conferences. 
• Ability to work outdoors during marching rehearsals and performances in varying weather conditions.

Terms of Employment 

• Full-time, 12-month administrative faculty appointment.   
• Faculty rank of Assistant Professor of Music, consistent with university qualifications and promotion guidelines.
